What are part time back end developers?

Part time back end developers are software professionals who build and maintain the server-side logic, databases, and APIs of web applications while working on a reduced, flexible schedule—often less than 40 hours per week. They focus on ensuring that the server, application, and database communicate efficiently, supporting the needs of front end systems. Part time roles can be ideal for those seeking work-life balance, students, or individuals with other commitments, while still contributing valuable technical expertise to software projects.

What is the difference between Part Time Back End Developer vs Part Time Web Developer?

AspectPart Time Back End DeveloperPart Time Web Developer
Primary FocusServer-side logic, databases, APIsFront-end design, user interface, client-side scripting
Required SkillsProgramming languages like Python, Java, PHP; database managementHTML, CSS, JavaScript, UI/UX design
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with front-end developers, backend teamsDesigns and implements website interfaces, often independently
Common UsageBuilding and maintaining server-side applicationsCreating website layouts and interactive features

While both roles involve web development, a Part Time Back End Developer focuses on server-side logic and database management, whereas a Part Time Web Developer emphasizes front-end design and user experience. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers find the right fit based on skills and project needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Back End Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Back End Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python, Java, or Node.js, along with a solid understanding of database management and APIs, usually backed by a relevant degree or practical experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, frameworks such as Django or Express, and cloud platforms is highly beneficial. Problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and time management are crucial soft skills for managing project tasks and collaborating remotely. These skills ensure you can deliver robust, scalable backend solutions efficiently, meet project deadlines, and integrate smoothly with front-end and cross-functional teams.

How do part-time back end developers typically manage collaboration and communication within a development team?

Part-time back end developers often coordinate closely with full-time team members through regular check-ins, project management tools, and clear documentation of their work. Since their working hours may not overlap entirely with the rest of the team, effective asynchronous communication—such as detailed code commits, progress updates, and written summaries—is essential. Many teams also use scheduled meetings or stand-ups to ensure everyone stays aligned. This collaborative approach helps maintain project momentum and ensures that part-time developers are integrated into the workflow despite their limited hours.

This role requires strong semiconductor backend engineering experience, hands-on problem solving, and the ability to collaborate closely with OSAT partners and cross-functional stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead technical engagement with OSAT suppliers on assembly and test process development, yield ramp, quality improvement, and volume manufacturing readiness.

  • Drive new product introduction (NPI) from engineering builds through production release, ensuring OSAT capability meets electrical/thermal/mechanical requirements for FPGA and SoC products.

  • Optimize packaging and test architectures for performance, cost, and reliability: flip-chip BGA, high-pin-count packages, substrate technologies, wafer-level solutions, burn-in/FT coverage.

  • Monitor and improve backend yield performance using data-driven analysis; identify systemic issues and lead root cause / corrective actions.

  • Partner with Test Engineering, Packaging, Product Engineering, DFM, and Quality teams on process optimization, failure analysis, and manufacturability improvements.

  • Implement and maintain process control systems, SPC methodologies, automation improvements, and lean manufacturing principles at OSAT.

  • Support cost reduction initiatives including BOM optimization, process simplification, and cycle time improvements.

  • Track supplier performance metrics (yield, DPPM, cost, cycle time, OEE) and provide updates with risk assessments and mitigation plans.

  • Lead or support reliability testing and package qualification activities aligned to industry standards (JEDEC, IPC, AEC-Q).

  • Maintain strong technical relationship and communication cadence with OSAT partners to ensure transparency, collaboration, and escalation management.
