What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time 3D Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time 3D Modeler, you need strong spatial awareness, proficiency in 3D modeling techniques, and a solid portfolio, often supported by formal education or relevant courses in design or animation. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as Blender, Autodesk Maya, or 3ds Max is typically required, and certifications in these tools can be advantageous. Creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with clients or team members are highly valued soft skills. These skills ensure accurate, visually compelling models that meet project specifications and deadlines in a competitive, collaborative environment.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time 3D modelers, and how can they be managed?

Part-time 3D modelers often face challenges related to tight deadlines and limited project hours, which can make time management crucial. Balancing multiple projects or clients may also require strong communication skills to clarify expectations and ensure deliverables meet quality standards. Working remotely or as a freelancer, which is common in this role, means staying updated on the latest software and industry trends independently. Building a strong portfolio and maintaining clear, consistent communication with clients or team members can help manage these challenges and support career growth.

What are part time 3D modeling jobs?

Part time 3D modeling jobs involve creating three-dimensional digital models using specialized software, but on a reduced or flexible schedule compared to full-time roles. These jobs are often found in industries like video games, animation, architecture, product design, and advertising. Part time 3D modelers may work on specific projects, freelance assignments, or provide support to teams needing extra modeling capacity. The work can be done remotely or on-site, depending on the employer and project requirements.

KHOI is a sculptural jewelry brand known for transforming art, culture, and self-expression into wearable design. Each piece tells a story that celebrates individuality, creativity, and intention. From bold statement earrings to delicate signature pieces, KHOI redefines what it means to wear art.

As KHOI continues to expand its design and production capabilities, we are seeking a full-time talented CAD Designer who can bring ideas to life through 3D modeling and design development. This role blends technical precision with creative artistry, supporting KHOI’s mission to deliver exceptional craftsmanship and innovation in every piece.

Position Summary

The Part-Time CAD Designer will be responsible for creating detailed 3D jewelry models and renderings for new collections, prototypes, and custom designs. This individual will collaborate closely with the creative director, and production partners to translate sketches, concepts, and inspiration into production-ready CAD files.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise in jewelry CAD design with an artistic eye and an appreciation for sculptural form, texture, and proportion. This person should be passionate about creative experimentation, material understanding, and bringing visionary concepts to market.

Core Responsibilities

1. Design and Modeling

  • Create high-quality 3D CAD models of jewelry pieces based on design sketches, technical drawings, or verbal direction.
  • Ensure all CAD files are optimized for 3D printing, casting, and production requirements.
  • Develop multiple iterations of designs to explore scale, proportions, and detailing with fast timelines.
  • Translate the brand’s artistic vision into structurally sound and manufacturable designs.

2. Rendering and Visualization

  • Produce realistic 3D renderings for design review, marketing, and presentation purposes.
  • Maintain an organized digital library of design files, renders, and specifications.

3. Collaboration and Prototyping

  • Work closely with the creative lead, and manufacturing partners to ensure design feasibility and quality.
  • Participate in prototype reviews, providing recommendations for material selection, finishes, and production adjustments.
  • Collaborate with vendors and jewelers to troubleshoot design challenges and maintain alignment with aesthetic and functional standards.
  • Assist with 3D printing coordination and sample management.

4. Innovation and Research

  • Stay current on design and production trends, materials, and technologies in jewelry and wearable art.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design, Jewelry Design, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
  • Two to four years of experience in CAD design for fine jewelry, fashion jewelry, or product design. (Please submit portfolio).
  • Advanced proficiency in 3D modeling software.
  • Strong understanding of jewelry construction, casting processes, and production constraints.
  • Experience preparing STL and technical drawings for manufacturers and 3D printing.
  • Proficiency in rendering software such as KeyShot or Blender.
  • Excellent attention to detail, precision, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, creative environment.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with sculptural or statement jewelry design.
  • Understanding of design for mixed materials such as resin, acrylic, or wood.
  • Knowledge of gemstone setting, metal finishing, and fabrication techniques.
  • Basic understanding of Adobe Creative Suite for presentation layouts or visual storytelling.
  • Comfort working with physical prototypes, samples, or molds.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with creative and technical partners.

Key Competencies

  • Creative Precision: Translates conceptual art into functional, manufacturable jewelry pieces.
  • Technical Expertise: Understands modeling tolerances, casting requirements, and design-for-production principles.
  • Aesthetic Sensibility: Upholds KHOI’s sculptural and cultural design aesthetic in every model.
  • Collaboration: Works fluidly across creative, operations, and manufacturing teams.
  • Innovation: Embraces emerging technologies and approaches to jewelry design.
  • Accountability: Maintains organization, file accuracy, and version control.
