What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a 3D Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a 3D Modeler, you need a solid understanding of visual design, spatial awareness, and proficiency in modeling techniques, usually supported by a degree in graphic design, animation, or a related field. Expertise in industry-standard software like Autodesk Maya, Blender, or 3ds Max, and familiarity with rendering engines or game engines, is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams are essential soft skills. These abilities ensure high-quality, visually appealing models that meet technical and artistic requirements in fields like gaming, film, and product design.

What are some common challenges faced by 3D modelers and how can they be addressed?

3D modelers often encounter challenges such as meeting tight deadlines, managing complex project requirements, and ensuring compatibility with different rendering engines or software. Effective time management and clear communication with designers, animators, and other team members can help address these issues. Staying updated on industry-standard tools and techniques also enables modelers to work more efficiently and produce high-quality assets that fit seamlessly into larger projects.

What is 3D modeling?

3D modeling is the process of creating a digital representation of a physical object or surface in three dimensions using specialized computer software. These digital models can be used in various industries, including video games, movies, architecture, engineering, and product design. 3D models are constructed by manipulating points, lines, and polygons to form a mesh that represents the shape of the object. The resulting models can be rendered into images, animated, or even 3D printed.

What is the difference between 3D Modeling vs 3D Animation?

Aspect3D Modeling3D Animation
Primary FocusCreating static 3D objects and modelsBringing 3D models to life through movement
Skills RequiredModeling techniques, software proficiency (e.g., Blender, Maya)Animation principles, rigging, timing
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, game development, film pre-productionFilm, gaming, advertising, interactive media
Common Certifications3D modeling courses, software certificationsAnimation courses, motion design certifications

While 3D Modeling involves creating detailed static objects, 3D Animation focuses on bringing those models to life through movement and storytelling. Both roles often overlap in industries like gaming and film, but they require distinct skill sets and tools.

Job description

Job Summary

As a 3D Modeling Intern, you will work fully remotely as part of WebstaurantStore’s 3D team, supporting AR related modeling projects and product visualization needs. This role reports to the 3D Modeling Manager and works closely with experienced 3D artists who provide direction, feedback, and support throughout the modeling process.

A typical day may include reviewing assigned tasks, creating or modifying 3D models in Blender, preparing assets for AR use, applying feedback from reviews, and providing progress updates during team check-ins. This position helps the department produce accurate, optimized, and high quality 3D assets that support WebstaurantStore’s digital product experience and broader business goals.

This is a full-time, paid, fully remote internship with flexible scheduling, provided equipment and software, and support from a collaborative 3D team.

Responsibilities
  • Create and modify 3D models using Blender (ZBrush experience is a plus)
  • Assist in preparing and optimizing models for AR applications
  • Follow established workflows, naming conventions, and quality standards
  • Collaborate with team members to complete assigned tasks and meet deadlines
  • Incorporate feedback from team leadership into revisions
  • Participate in team check-ins and progress updates
  • Support general modeling needs across AR-related projects
  • Provide accurate time estimates for tasks, including iteration and review time.
  • Consistently deliver work that meets quantitative and quality KPI goals.

  • A dedicated home office space that is noise- and distraction-free. The space should have strong wireless connection or a wired Ethernet connection (wired connection is preferred, if possible).
  • A valid, physical address (apartment, suite, etc.). PO Boxes are not supported, as a physical address is required for you to receive your computer equipment.
  • The desire and ability to work and communicate with other team members via chat, webcam, etc.
  • Legal residents of one of the following states: (AK, AL, AR, AZ, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, NH, NM, NV, OH, OK, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WI, WV, or WY). H-1B Visa Sponsorship Not Available, W2 only.
Experience

  • Exposure to 3D tools such as Blender, ZBrush, or similar (through school or personal projects)
  • Basic understanding of modeling, UVs, and texturing principles
  • Familiarity with real-time workflows (game engines, AR/VR, or similar) is a plus
