WARD 4, DISTRICT 2

JOB DESCRIPTION:

GROUNDSKEEPER (PARKS & RECREATION GROUNDS)

JOB SUMMARY:

Groundskeepers perform the daily grounds and facility readiness work that keeps SPAR recreation sites safe, clean, attractive, and ready for the public.This role supports turf care, field preparation, landscape upkeep, interior and exterior cleanliness, and minor repairs at SPAR recreation facilities excluding the RAQC and Golf Course.Work is performed under the direction of the Foreman or Grounds Supervisor.

Entry level full-time maintenance position within the Department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES: (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties that may be performed.)

Turf & Grounds Care

  • Mow, edge, trim, and blow turf areas at parks, athletic complexes, and common areas.
  • Weed-eat fence lines, ditch banks, bleacher perimeters, dugouts, and hard-to-reach spaces.
  • Perform turf tasks such as seeding, fertilizing, spot-spraying weeds, and aeration as assigned.
  • Drag infields, groom playing surfaces, and prepare fields for practices and games.

Interior & Exterior Cleanliness/Readiness

  • Pick up litter and debris; empty trash receptacles and dump trash at designated locations.
  • Sweep and mop recreation rooms and public-use interior spaces at assigned facilities.
  • Clean restrooms daily including floors, toilets, sinks, mirrors, and restocking basic supplies (report fixture/system issues to Foreman).
  • Clean and maintain exterior public areas around restrooms, pavilions, playgrounds, and spectator zones.

Minor Repairs & Setup Support

  • Assist with same-day minor non-system repairs as directed (tightening hardware, gate adjustments, small patches, touch-up paint).
  • Help set up and break down for tournaments, rentals, and special events (trash cans, benches, goals, signage, etc.).

Equipment Operation & Care

  • Operate mowers, trimmers, blowers, utility vehicles, and other grounds equipment safely.
  • Perform basic pre-use checks (fuel, blades, tires); report issues promptly.
  • Clean and store equipment properly at the end of each shift.

Safety & Team Expectations

  • Wear required PPE and follow SPAR safety rules at all times.
  • Use cones/barriers when working around the public.
  • Communicate hazards, shortages, and site issues to the Foreman.
  • Perform other grounds-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to perform physical outdoor work in all weather.
  • Basic experience with grounds equipment preferred; training provided.
  • Ability to follow instructions and maintain consistent quality.
  • Professional public presence and teamwork mindset.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • Grounds, landscaping, custodial, orconstruction-supportexperience preferred but notrequired.
  • Valid Louisiana driver's licenserequiredand insurable.
  • Must passrequiredphysical, drug testing, driving record check, and background investigation.

Work Environment

  • Outdoor physical laborrequiringlifting, bending, standing, walking, and equipment use; some weekend/holiday work may berequiredduring peak seasons.
