Paralegal / Legal Assistant — Construction Litigation 
Location: Houston, TX 

About the Role 


The Cromeens Law Firm, PLLC is a boutique construction law firm representing contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers across multiple states. We have an immediate opening for a paralegal/legal assistant to support our busy construction litigation and lien/collections docket. This is a chance to build real expertise in a specialized practice area — most paralegals never get exposure to construction law, and we'll train you in it. 


Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Bill 35 hours per week. 
  • Timely complete tasks assigned by attorneys. 
  • Drafting correspondence to clients and opposing parties. 
  • Calendaring appointments, court deadlines, and statutory lien filing deadlines (which vary by state and can be as short as 15–90 days). 
  • Preparing and filing Mechanic's & Materialman's (M&M) liens across multiple jurisdictions (TX, CA, LA, GA, KS). 
  • Reviewing and organizing construction contracts, subcontractor agreements, payment applications, and change orders. 
  • Supporting pre-litigation and litigation collections of matters tied to lien enforcement. 
  • Filing and e-serving various documents. 
  • Communicating with Court staff. 
  • Communicating with clients. 
  • Organizing client files in Clio. 
  • Circulating files to parties. 
  • Drafting various motions and pleadings. 
  • Assisting with compiling exhibits, preparing, and organizing court appearances, trial settings, mediation, and arbitration. 
  • Arranging transportation and lodging as necessary for witnesses, experts, attorneys, etc., for court appearances, trial settings, mediation, and arbitration. 
  • Staying informed on client matters and assisting your supervising attorney in maintaining client communications and relationships. 
  • Promptly responding to client communications (typically within 24 hours). 
  • Updating case status in weekly strategy meetings. 
  • Assisting with other tasks as assigned. 

Required Skills/Abilities: 

  • Superior verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in a variety of situations. 
  • Excellent work ethic. 
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to independently manage multiple deadlines across jurisdictions. 
  • Attention to detail — accuracy on lien filings and statutory deadlines is critical. 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Strong legal research skills. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software. 
  • Proficiency with Clio or similar legal case management software. 
  • Familiarity with Texas e-filing systems (eFileTexas). 

Preferred Skills/Abilities: 

  • Familiarity with construction industry terminology and documents (contracts, payment applications, change orders). 
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus. 
  • Notary Public certification, or willingness to obtain. 
  • Discretion in handling confidential client and case information. 

Education and Experience: 

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in paralegal studies or related field preferred. 
  • Paralegal certificate preferred. 
  • Relevant litigation or construction industry experience preferred — construction background plus but not required. We provide training. 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. 
  • Must be able to lift to 15 pounds at times. 

Job Type: Full-time 

Salary: $52,000 – $65,000 per year, depending on experience
