To thrive as a Part Time Paralegal, you need a solid understanding of legal concepts, strong research and writing abilities, and typically an associate's degree or paralegal certificate. Familiarity with legal research databases (such as Westlaw or LexisNexis), document management systems, and Microsoft Office is commonly required. What Does a Part-Time Paralegal Do?

As a part-time paralegal, you assist lawyers throughout a case and handle administrative responsibilities. You may be asked to research a case, gather and review evidence, draft legal documents, prepare for depositions, trials, and hearings, and maintain essential files for a single lawyer or the entire firm. Your duties also include scheduling meetings, completing paperwork, and assisting lawyers as needed. Working part-time, you may work for a couple of hours every day or a couple of days a week, depending on the demand. A part-time paralegal can work for a law firm or provide services for a private practice lawyer.

Will AI replace paralegals?

AI technology can automate routine tasks such as document review and legal research, which may reduce some administrative duties performed by paralegals. However, paralegals provide critical support through tasks requiring judgment, communication, and understanding of legal procedures that AI cannot fully replicate. The role is expected to evolve with technology, emphasizing skills in legal analysis and client interaction.

  • Case Management: Manage matters from intake through resolution, maintaining organized files and ensuring all deadlines and requirements are tracked and met
  • Document Drafting: Draft, edit, and format legal documents including pleadings, correspondence, discovery, and other case-related materials
  • Court Filings: Prepare and file documents in accordance with court rules, including e-filing and maintaining proof of service and filing confirmations

  • Client & Third-Party Communication: Communicate professionally with clients, courts, opposing counsel, and vendors to support case progression
  • Case Progression & Follow-Up: Proactively follow up on outstanding items, ensure matters continue moving forward, and anticipate attorney needs
  • Criminal Law Support (Preferred): Provide support on criminal matters as needed, including preparing and organizing case files, assisting with filings and discovery, tracking court dates, and supporting overall case management through resolution
About You:

  • 3+ years of recent law firm paralegal experience in at least two legal areas (litigation, criminal, estate planning, bankruptcy, corporate law, or family law)

  • Minimum availability of 20 hours/week to start
