How much do painting professor jobs pay per year?
What is a painting professor?
A Painting Professor is an educator who teaches painting techniques, art theory, and history at a college or university. They design course curricula, guide students in developing their artistic skills, and provide critiques to help refine their work. Additionally, they may conduct research, exhibit their own artwork, and contribute to the academic community through publications and professional development. Many Painting Professors also mentor students pursuing careers in the visual arts.
What are typical daily responsibilities for a painting professor?
A Painting Professor typically divides their day between teaching studio courses, providing one-on-one critiques, preparing lectures or demonstrations, and maintaining their own artistic practice for professional development. They also grade assignments, participate in faculty meetings, and may contribute to curriculum planning or attend student exhibitions. Collaboration with colleagues from other art disciplines is common, as is mentoring students on portfolio development or career options. The role is dynamic, offering a blend of creative instruction, academic duties, and active participation in the broader art community.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the painting professor position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Painting Professor, you need expertise in painting techniques, art history, and curriculum development, typically evidenced by an MFA or higher in fine arts. Familiarity with studio equipment, digital imaging tools, and academic grading platforms like Canvas or Blackboard is often expected. Exceptional communication, mentorship ability, and adaptability are vital soft skills for engaging students and fostering creative growth. These attributes ensure both effective teaching and the professional development of students within an academic environment.

Position Summary
The Studio Arts Program at Trinity College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning fall 2027 in the area of painting. The candidate will be head of the painting area, teaching across all levels of painting, overseeing facilities, and developing the curriculum in innovative ways. Other responsibilities include mentoring students, departmental service, participation and contribution to departmental programming, and service to the college. The teaching load is 2/2 for the first two years (and 3/2 thereafter, five courses per year), with a one-semester paid leave every fourth year. Position offers a competitive salary and benefits, a start-up expense fund, ongoing annual research funds, conference travel funds and a personal studio space.
We are especially interested in candidates who welcome the interchange of ideas that working at a liberal arts college provides, and whose scholarly and creative interests would lend to trans-disciplinary collaboration (whether via research or pedagogy). Additionally, we seek a colleague who will engage with the city of Hartford and is able to incorporate into their teaching the diverse roles of art in a global and urban context.
Trinity is a highly selective, independent, nonsectarian liberal arts institution located in the capital city of Hartford, Connecticut. The college maintains a rigorous academic profile complemented by a vibrant co-curricular program. With more than 2,100 full-time undergraduate students, representing forty-three states and ninety-one countries, we consider our location in a culturally and socioeconomically diverse capital city to be among Trinity's most distinctive assets; and we cultivate strong connections with our surrounding neighbors and with institutions and organizations throughout Hartford and the region. As a preeminent liberal arts college in an urban setting, Trinity College prepares students to be bold, independent thinkers who lead transformative lives.
Qualifications
Applicants must demonstrate evidence of excellence in teaching as well as continued, strong, professional accomplishments in their field on a national and international level. We encourage candidates versed in the history, theory, and criticism of contemporary art. The department prioritizes a candidate's broad intellectual rigor and capacity to teach a wide spectrum of painting techniques and concepts to majors and non-majors. Applicants must hold an MFA degree or equivalent. Two years or more teaching experience preferred.
Compensation
Competitive salary and benefits, plus start-up expense fund.
Special Instructions to Applicants
Please submit the following: Cover letter that summarizes qualifications and creative/research interests, CV, statement of teaching philosophy, two sample syllabi of courses taught, 15-20 images of current work (images should emphasize breadth of work with limited detail shots) and 15 images of student work from classes taught labelled and combined into one pdf document, and contact information for three references willing to provide letters of recommendation. References will be contacted for those finalists reaching interview stage of search.
Review of applications will begin on November 15 and continue until position is filled. Please direct any questions to Lynn Sullivan, Search Committee Co-Chair (lynn.sullivan@trincoll.edu).
