How much do pain research jobs pay per year?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Pain Research position, and why are they important?
To excel in Pain Research, a strong background in biomedical sciences, clinical research methods, and data analysis is essential, typically supported by advanced degrees such as a Ph.D. or M.D. Expertise in statistical software (e.g., SPSS, SAS), clinical trial protocols, and knowledge of regulatory standards like Good Clinical Practice (GCP) are highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, teamwork, and effective scientific communication are key soft skills needed for this role. These competencies are crucial for designing rigorous studies, ensuring accurate data interpretation, and successfully collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to advance pain management solutions.
What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in Pain Research?
Professionals in Pain Research typically design and conduct clinical trials or laboratory studies, analyze experimental data, and prepare research findings for publication or presentation. They often collaborate closely with clinicians, patients, and fellow scientists to develop study protocols and gather meaningful patient-reported outcomes. In addition, managing regulatory documentation, applying for grant funding, and staying current with advancements in pain science are common tasks. The role is dynamic and can involve both independent research and teamwork on large, multi-center studies, providing a varied and intellectually stimulating work environment.
What is a Pain Research job?
A Pain Research job involves studying the causes, mechanisms, and treatments of pain to improve patient care and develop new therapies. Researchers may conduct clinical trials, analyze data, and collaborate with scientists, healthcare professionals, and pharmaceutical companies. Their work helps advance pain management strategies for conditions such as chronic pain, neuropathic pain, and post-surgical pain.

Job description
The NYU Pain Research Center (PRC) and Department of Molecular Pathobiology at the New York University (NYU) Dentistry seeks applications at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor for tenure track research-focused positions in the areas of chronic pain mechanisms, therapeutic management of pain, and related disciplines.
The Department of Molecular Pathobiology has a strong and rapidly expanding research program with substantial support from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, and Foundations. The Department is located in state-of-the-art laboratories in close proximity to the broader NYU research community. Research in the Department focuses on understanding normal human biology and disease through studies of molecules, cells, tissues and systems as well as the engineering aspects of life science and medicine. Current interests include: molecular mechanisms and treatment of chronic pain; metabolic and inflammatory diseases; gut-brain signaling; and regenerative and developmental biology, tissue engineering, biomaterials and AI-linked diagnostics. The members of the Pain Research Center investigate the structure and function of receptors and ion channels that signal pain, pain signaling mechanisms and pathways, as well as mechanisms of neuropathic, inflammatory and cancer pain, abdominal pain, oral sensation and itch.
The Department wishes to recruit highly creative scientists who will lead and maintain cutting-edge and extramurally funded research programs that will complement and synergize with current research activities in the Department and the Pain Research Center. The ideal candidate will collaborate with members of the Pain Research Center and Department of Molecular Pathobiology, faculty of NYU College of Dentistry, NYU School of Medicine-Langone Medical Center, NYU Tandon School of Engineering and NYU College of Arts and Sciences, as well as foster collaborations with the greater New York research community. Individuals studying pain mechanisms using state-of-the-art approaches of biomedical and chemical engineering, stem cell biology and tissue regeneration, modeling painful diseases using human-focused experimental models, and developing novel approaches to treat chronic pain are encouraged to apply.
Qualifications
Qualified candidates should hold a PhD, DDS, MD or equivalent higher degree, and have a demonstrated record of scholarly excellence illustrated by the publication of influential research papers and a record of substantial extramural funding. Candidates with K99/R00 or similar awards are strongly encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will be expected to maintain a robust externally funded research program and to contribute to the intellectual life of the Department by mentoring and instructing students and postdoctoral fellows and by contributing university and community service. Teaching requirements will be commensurate with the Department's needs and the applicant's qualifications.
Successful candidates will receive a competitive start-up package. In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for the rank of Assistant Professor on the tenure track is $140K - $210K & for the rank of Associate Professor on the tenure track is $135K - $225K. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
The Department of Molecular Pathobiology provides a respectful, equitable and inclusive community that fosters creativity, innovation and collaboration. NYU is committed to building a culturally inclusive, intellectual community, and strongly encourages women and minorities to apply.
