How much do overnight operating room nurse jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 18, 2026, the average hourly pay for overnight operating room nurse in the United States is $45.47, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $35.82 and $48.80 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an overnight operating room nurse?

Overnight Operating Room Nurses are registered nurses who work during nighttime hours in hospital operating rooms, assisting surgeons and caring for patients before, during, and after surgical procedures. Their responsibilities include preparing the operating room, ensuring surgical instruments are sterile, monitoring patients' vital signs, and providing post-operative care. Working overnight, they play a crucial role in handling emergency surgeries and supporting surgical teams when most of the hospital staff are off duty. This role requires excellent clinical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently during night shifts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight operating room nurse?

To excel as an Overnight Operating Room Nurse, you need expertise in perioperative nursing procedures, acute patient care, and a current RN license, often with certifications like CNOR. Familiarity with surgical instruments, anesthesia monitoring systems, and electronic health records is essential for this role. Outstanding attention to detail, resilience under pressure, and effective communication skills are crucial for managing complex cases during nighttime hours. These competencies ensure patient safety, surgical efficiency, and coordinated teamwork in a high-stakes, after-hours environment.

What are some common challenges faced by overnight operating room nurses, and how can they be managed?

Overnight Operating Room Nurses often encounter challenges such as managing fatigue due to night shifts, responding to emergency surgeries with little notice, and working with limited on-site staff compared to daytime shifts. To manage these challenges, nurses typically develop strong time-management and communication skills, maintain good self-care routines to combat fatigue, and rely on close teamwork with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and surgical techs. Hospitals often provide additional resources and support, such as flexible scheduling and access to wellness programs, to help overnight staff maintain high-quality patient care.

Do overnight operating room nurses work night shifts?

Yes, overnight operating room nurses typically work night shifts as part of their schedule to provide 24-hour patient care in hospitals. They must be prepared to work during evenings, nights, and weekends, often requiring certifications such as CNOR and strong clinical skills. Shift work is common in this role to ensure continuous surgical services.

Where do overnight operating room nurses make the most money?

Overnight operating room nurses tend to earn higher salaries in regions with a higher cost of living and greater demand for healthcare services, such as metropolitan areas or states with a strong healthcare industry. Factors like experience, certifications, and hospital type also influence earning potential, with specialized skills and advanced certifications often leading to higher pay.
