To gain operating room nurse experience, new nurses should pursue a registered nurse license, complete a perioperative nursing certification such as CNOR, and seek entry-level positions or internships in surgical units. Gaining skills in sterile technique, patient monitoring, and teamwork is essential, and some hospitals offer orientation programs for nurses transitioning into perioperative roles.

Can I go straight to an operating room nurse with no experience?

Becoming an operating room nurse typically requires prior nursing experience, usually as a registered nurse (RN), along with specialized training in perioperative care. Employers often prefer candidates with clinical experience, certifications like CNOR, and knowledge of surgical procedures. Entry into OR nursing without experience is uncommon and may require starting in general nursing roles first.
