What is an overnight nanny?

Overnight nannies are childcare professionals who provide care for children during the nighttime hours, typically while parents are sleeping or working night shifts. Their duties often include feeding, diaper changes, soothing babies back to sleep, and sometimes light household tasks related to the child's care. Overnight nannies are especially helpful for families with newborns or infants who wake frequently at night. They can help parents get much-needed rest and support healthy sleep habits for the child. Some overnight nannies may also have specialized training in infant sleep or newborn care.

What does an overnight nanny do?

As an overnight nanny, your job is to care for infants and children throughout the night, especially if the parents have to travel or work during the evening. In this role, you may cook dinner, enforce bedtime rules, and otherwise help maintain a household routine whether or not the parents are home. Overnight nannies often live and sleep on-site for as long as needed, which can be anywhere from a few days to several months. You may provide other help or support as needed. This job often involves driving with children, addressing issues preventing sleep, teaching specific skills, handling minor medical issues, and creating progress reports for the parents.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Overnight Nanny, you need experience in child care, infant and child CPR certification, and a solid understanding of child development and nighttime routines. Familiarity with baby monitors, feeding equipment, and sleep tracking apps is often required. Patience, reliability, and excellent communication with parents help build trust and ensure a supportive environment for both children and families. These skills and qualities are vital for maintaining children's safety and well-being during nighttime hours and providing peace of mind for parents.

What are some common challenges faced by overnight nannies, and how can they be managed effectively?

Overnight nannies often encounter challenges such as managing irregular sleep patterns, responding to nighttime awakenings, and ensuring the child's comfort throughout the night. It's important to communicate clearly with parents about routines, sleep training approaches, and any special needs or preferences. Building a calm and reassuring nighttime environment helps minimize disruptions, and being adaptable to unexpected situations—like illness or teething—can make the role more manageable. Staying organized and maintaining a log of nighttime activities also aids in providing thorough updates to parents.

More details:
A family in Marlton, NJ, is seeking a dedicated, long-term nanny and family assistant who will become a trusted and consistent member of their household support team. The primary responsibility is caring for their 9-year-old child. The schedule is Monday through Friday, encompassing morning hours from 6:00 AM to 8:30 AM before school, and afternoon hours from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM after school. The position also includes overnight care on occasions when the parent is traveling, with additional compensation provided for overnight responsibilities.

Duties Include:

The main focus is caring for the child during the mother's parenting weeks, including managing morning routines such as breakfast, preparation for school, and ensuring the child boards the bus safely. After school, duties include transportation to extracurricular activities, homework assistance, dinner preparation, and overseeing the evening routine until the mother returns from work.

When the child is at school or with the father, the role extends to family assistant duties such as laundry, meal prep, grocery shopping, running errands, household organization, maintaining common areas, and scheduling appointments as needed to support household functionality. While the position is not primarily custodial housekeeping, the ideal candidate will enjoy organization and demonstrate initiative. Responsibilities also include preparing meals for the child, managing children's laundry, light tidying, coordinating appointments, handling household bills, and managing occasional home-related tasks such as Amazon or other retail returns and providing access to contractors when necessary.

Ideal Candidate:
The preferred candidate is warm, dependable, organized, proactive, and an excellent communicator. The successful applicant will display emotional maturity, patience, trustworthiness, and confidence in caring for school-aged children. A proactive approach, adaptability, strong time management, and the ability to anticipate household needs are highly valued.

Experience supporting children with ADHD or executive functioning challenges is a significant plus. The candidate should be skilled in establishing consistent routines, structure, and positive reinforcement. A safe driving record, sound judgment, professionalism, discretion, and flexibility are required. Ultimately, seeking someone committed to building a long-term, trusting relationship with our family and becoming a positive, reliable presence in our child's life.

About the Family:
The child is a kind-hearted, creative, intelligent, humorous, and energetic 9-year-old. He has a particular interest in social studies and science but finds math more challenging. His after-school activities include sports, tutoring, and occasional playdates.

The family environment is warm, respectful, organized, and family-centered. The mother, a senior executive, is hands-on and values consistency, clear communication, and kindness. The parents are divorced and share custody, with a focus on providing stability and support across both homes to help their son feel secure, supported, and encouraged.

Discipline is centered around setting clear expectations within a positive and supportive environment, emphasizing respect, accountability, and teamwork. Approaches are calm and respectful, with age-appropriate consequences aimed at teaching and guiding rather than punishing. Patience and flexibility are essential when addressing behavior and challenges.

Salary plus paid vacation days off, paid holidays off, paid sick days off, and paid personal days off.
