Overnight Lab information

What is an overnight lab?

Overnight Lab jobs typically involve working during nighttime hours in laboratory settings. Employees may be responsible for processing samples, conducting experiments, analyzing data, or maintaining lab equipment while most daytime staff are not present. These roles are crucial for labs that operate 24/7, such as medical testing facilities, research institutions, or industrial labs, to ensure continuous workflow and timely results. Working overnight can involve unique challenges, including managing fatigue and adjusting to a non-traditional schedule, but it also often offers higher pay or shift differentials.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight lab technician?

To thrive as an Overnight Lab Technician, you need a solid understanding of laboratory procedures, safety protocols, and typically an associate degree or higher in a science-related field. Familiarity with lab instruments, data analysis software, and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) is often required. Attention to detail, effective time management, and strong problem-solving skills are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure accurate and timely results, maintain lab safety standards, and support continuous lab operations during overnight shifts.

What are some common challenges faced when working an overnight lab shift, and how can they be managed?

Overnight lab positions often require adapting to an unconventional sleep schedule, which can impact alertness and overall health. Managing fatigue is crucial; strategies include maintaining a consistent sleep routine, staying hydrated, and taking short, scheduled breaks during shifts. Communication with daytime staff is also important to ensure smooth handovers and continuity of work. Additionally, overnight staff may encounter limited on-site resources, so strong problem-solving skills and self-sufficiency are valuable in this role.

What is the difference between Overnight Lab vs Night Lab Technician?

Common Search & ComparisonOvernight Lab vs Night Lab Technician

The main difference between an Overnight Lab and a Night Lab Technician lies in the job scope. An Overnight Lab often refers to the shift timing or the lab's operational hours, while a Night Lab Technician is a specific role responsible for performing lab tests during overnight shifts. Both roles typically require similar credentials and work in comparable environments, primarily in healthcare or research labs operating overnight hours.

Job description

Join Toyota Automated Logistics to design, build, and prove out the controls behind our next generation of automation products. The PLE team owns product variants, sustaining engineering, and select new product development across our growing portfolio - conveyors, AGVs, and emerging product lines - plus the test infrastructure that validates them.
Product Platforms Supported:
  • AGV product lines - sustaining and variants for our mobile fleet
  • Conveyor product lines - standard products, variants, and new features
  • New product lines - emerging platforms entering the PLE portfolio
  • Engineering Lab - test loops, AGV test cells, and validation infrastructure

The PLE Controls Engineer owns the electrical and controls side of our multi-platform portfolio - from PLC/HMI and onboard control architectures, to test loop programming in the engineering lab, to the design documentation supporting manufacturing and field deployment. You'll have direct ownership of how our products are controlled, tested, and documented across fixed and mobile automation platforms.
Job Functions:
Product Controls, Electrical Design & Embedded Systems
  • Develop and maintain standard PLC, HMI, motor control, and onboard control architectures across conveyor, AGV, and new product lines.
  • Own product electrical engineering deliverables - schematics, panel layouts, BOMs, power distribution, low-voltage DC, and component standards for fixed and mobile platforms.
  • Work with embedded systems and onboard controllers (microcontroller subsystems, CAN/serial comms, firmware interfaces) and integrate with higher-level PLC or fleet control.
  • Perform signal analysis and troubleshooting on control/feedback circuits (encoders, load cells, vision/safety sensors, motor feedback) using scopes, data loggers, and bus analyzers.
  • Drive standardization and reuse across product variants to reduce engineering cost per project; support new feature, variant, and new product line introductions from concept through release.

Test Loop Programming & Lab Support
  • Program and maintain PLC/HMI/controller code for engineering lab test loops and AGV test cells used to validate new products, features, and variants.
  • Build test sequences, data capture, and instrumentation tie-ins to support structured testing and RCA across product types.
  • Support development of test infrastructure for new product lines as they enter the PLE portfolio.

Documentation, Sustaining & Cross-Functional
  • Produce and maintain controls design documentation (sequence of operations, I/O lists, network architectures, integration specs) and author standard work used by project controls engineers downstream.
  • Contribute to engineering process and software ownership within PLE (PLM, design tools, code repositories, version control).
  • Support sustaining issues across all product lines - RCA, ECNs, field issue resolution - and partner with mechanical, software, and project engineering on integrated solutions.
  • Evaluate new controls technologies, components, and suppliers; build strong supplier relationships for technical support and roadmap alignment.

Travel Requirements:
  • 10% overnight travel (Travel expenses paid by Toyota Automated Logistics)

Required Qualifications and Preferred Skills:
  • BS in Electrical, Controls, Mechatronics, or related Engineering discipline (MS preferred).
  • 3+ years of PLC/HMI programming experience (Allen-Bradley/Rockwell and/or Siemens).
  • Panel design, electrical schematic, and SolidWorks or AutoCAD Electrical (or EPLAN) experience.
  • Strong documentation, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Must be eligible to work in the USA long term without sponsorship.
  • Employees must follow all information security policies, protect confidential data, complete required training, and report any suspected security incidents to support our information security controls.
