What kinds of environments and conditions can I expect when working in Outdoor Mechanical Engineering roles?

Outdoor Mechanical Engineering roles often involve working at construction sites, infrastructure projects, or remote locations, where engineers oversee mechanical systems in real-world conditions. Expect to spend significant time outdoors, sometimes in varying weather and terrain, conducting site inspections, equipment testing, or overseeing installations and maintenance. These engineers typically collaborate with civil engineers, project managers, and field technicians to solve challenges unique to each location. Adaptability and attention to safety protocols are important due to the unpredictable nature of outdoor work. This hands-on, field-based experience offers both variety and the opportunity to see the direct impact of your engineering solutions.

What is an Outdoor Mechanical Engineering job?

An Outdoor Mechanical Engineering job involves designing, maintaining, and troubleshooting mechanical systems used in outdoor environments. This can include equipment for construction, transportation, energy production, or climate control. Engineers in this field work in varying weather conditions and may be responsible for ensuring durability, efficiency, and safety of mechanical systems exposed to the elements. The role often requires field testing, structural analysis, and collaboration with other engineers and technicians.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Outdoor Mechanical Engineering position, and why are they important?

To excel in Outdoor Mechanical Engineering, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering principles, fieldwork experience, and a relevant degree such as a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, field-testing equipment, and professional engineer (PE) certification are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, adaptability, and effective communication are highly valued soft skills. These competencies are crucial for ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient engineering solutions in dynamic outdoor environments.

What engineering jobs are outside?

Outdoor mechanical engineering jobs involve designing, maintaining, and repairing mechanical systems in outdoor environments such as construction sites, manufacturing plants, or field operations. These roles often require knowledge of environmental conditions, safety protocols, and the use of tools like CAD software and testing equipment. They may also involve travel and physical activity to perform inspections or installations in various outdoor settings.

Can mechanical engineers work outside?

Mechanical engineers often work outdoors when their projects involve field testing, site inspections, or maintenance of equipment and systems. They may need to use tools and safety gear in outdoor environments and should be prepared for varying weather conditions. The job can include site visits, environmental assessments, and working on construction or industrial sites.

Can you make $200,000 a year as a mechanical engineer?

Senior outdoor mechanical engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills, and working in high-paying industries or locations can potentially earn $200,000 or more annually. Achieving this level often requires advanced certifications, leadership roles, or working on complex projects in specialized environments. Entry- and mid-level positions typically have lower salary ranges.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

In the field of outdoor mechanical engineering, senior-level professionals such as lead engineers or specialized consultants with extensive experience and advanced certifications can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $500,000 annually, especially in high-demand industries like renewable energy or large-scale infrastructure. These roles often require advanced technical skills, project management expertise, and leadership responsibilities.

Job description

Description:

The Role

We are seeking a Manager of Mechanical Engineering to lead a team of 5–10 engineers focused on the mechanical design and integration of power conversion systems.

This role combines team leadership with deep technical ownership. You will be responsible for guiding the mechanical design of power electronics enclosures, integrating inverter systems into larger platforms, and ensuring robust solutions for thermal performance and environmental protection.

You will work closely with electrical, firmware, and manufacturing teams to deliver systems that are not only high-performance but also manufacturable, serviceable, and reliable in the field

Requirements:
  • Lead and develop a team of 5–10 mechanical engineers
  • Own the mechanical design of power electronics enclosures and inverter packaging
  • Drive system-level mechanical integration of inverter platforms into multi-megawatt (~5 MW) energy systems
  • Design and optimize cooling solutions (air, liquid, hybrid) for high-power electronics
  • Define strategies for environmental protection (IP-rated enclosures, sealing, corrosion resistance, etc.)
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical, firmware, and manufacturing teams to ensure seamless system integration
  • Guide design tradeoffs across thermal performance, structural integrity, cost, and manufacturability
  • Lead design reviews, prototyping, and validation testing (thermal, environmental, mechanical)
  • Ensure designs meet reliability, safety, and regulatory requirements
  • Mentor engineers and build strong technical capability within the team
  • Take ownership of system performance in real-world operating conditions

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related field)
  • 7+ years of experience in mechanical design for complex electromechanical systems
  • 2+ years of experience leading or managing engineering teams
  • Strong expertise in:
    • Enclosure design for industrial or outdoor systems
    • Thermal management of power electronics
    • Mechanical integration of complex systems
  • Experience working with high-power systems (power electronics, industrial, energy, or similar)
  • Knowledge of environmental protection design (IP ratings, sealing, materials, coatings)
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes (sheet metal, welding, machining, assembly)
  • Experience with CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks or similar) and mechanical simulation tools
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work at both system and component levels
  • Effective communicator with cross-functional collaboration experience

Benefits

  • 401(k) with company matching
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Disability and life insurance
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • Tuition reimbursement
