Common Search & ComparisonYesYes

Assistant Outdoor Mechanical Engineering and Assistant Civil Engineering roles share similar credentials and work environments, often involving site inspections and project support. The main difference lies in their focus: mechanical roles emphasize machinery and mechanical systems outdoors, while civil roles focus on infrastructure and construction projects. Both positions are essential in their respective industries and are frequently compared by job seekers seeking entry-level roles in outdoor engineering fields.

What is an Assistant Outdoor Mechanical Engineer?

An Assistant Outdoor Mechanical Engineer is a professional who supports senior engineers in designing, maintaining, and overseeing mechanical systems and equipment used outdoors. These projects may include HVAC systems, renewable energy installations, or machinery in outdoor settings like parks, construction sites, or public infrastructure. The assistant’s duties often involve conducting site inspections, preparing reports, and assisting with troubleshooting and repairs. This role provides hands-on learning and is ideal for those starting a career in mechanical engineering with a focus on outdoor environments.

Can mechanical engineers work outside?

Mechanical engineers often work outdoors when their projects involve field testing, site inspections, or installation of equipment. They may need to use tools and safety gear in outdoor environments and should be prepared for varying weather conditions. The job can include site visits, environmental assessments, and hands-on work in outdoor settings.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as an Assistant Outdoor Mechanical Engineer?

As an Assistant Outdoor Mechanical Engineer, you'll typically support senior engineers in the design, installation, and maintenance of mechanical systems used in outdoor environments, such as HVAC units, piping, and structural supports. Your daily work may include conducting site inspections, collecting data, drafting technical reports, and assisting with troubleshooting equipment issues. You'll often collaborate with multidisciplinary teams—including civil engineers, architects, and construction crews—to ensure that projects meet safety and regulatory standards. This role is hands-on and field-oriented, offering opportunities to develop practical skills and progress toward more senior engineering positions.

Can you make $200,000 a year as a mechanical engineer?

As an assistant outdoor mechanical engineer, earning $200,000 annually is possible but typically requires extensive experience, advanced skills, and working in high-paying industries or managerial roles. Most mechanical engineers earn between $70,000 and $120,000, with top earners in specialized fields or leadership positions reaching higher salaries. Achieving this level often involves additional certifications, a strong professional network, and working in regions with higher cost of living and salaries.

Job description

Description:

The Role

We are seeking a Manager of Mechanical Engineering to lead a team of 5–10 engineers focused on the mechanical design and integration of power conversion systems.

This role combines team leadership with deep technical ownership. You will be responsible for guiding the mechanical design of power electronics enclosures, integrating inverter systems into larger platforms, and ensuring robust solutions for thermal performance and environmental protection.

You will work closely with electrical, firmware, and manufacturing teams to deliver systems that are not only high-performance but also manufacturable, serviceable, and reliable in the field

Requirements:
  • Lead and develop a team of 5–10 mechanical engineers
  • Own the mechanical design of power electronics enclosures and inverter packaging
  • Drive system-level mechanical integration of inverter platforms into multi-megawatt (~5 MW) energy systems
  • Design and optimize cooling solutions (air, liquid, hybrid) for high-power electronics
  • Define strategies for environmental protection (IP-rated enclosures, sealing, corrosion resistance, etc.)
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical, firmware, and manufacturing teams to ensure seamless system integration
  • Guide design tradeoffs across thermal performance, structural integrity, cost, and manufacturability
  • Lead design reviews, prototyping, and validation testing (thermal, environmental, mechanical)
  • Ensure designs meet reliability, safety, and regulatory requirements
  • Mentor engineers and build strong technical capability within the team
  • Take ownership of system performance in real-world operating conditions

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related field)
  • 7+ years of experience in mechanical design for complex electromechanical systems
  • 2+ years of experience leading or managing engineering teams
  • Strong expertise in:
    • Enclosure design for industrial or outdoor systems
    • Thermal management of power electronics
    • Mechanical integration of complex systems
  • Experience working with high-power systems (power electronics, industrial, energy, or similar)
  • Knowledge of environmental protection design (IP ratings, sealing, materials, coatings)
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes (sheet metal, welding, machining, assembly)
  • Experience with CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks or similar) and mechanical simulation tools
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work at both system and component levels
  • Effective communicator with cross-functional collaboration experience

Benefits

  • 401(k) with company matching
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Disability and life insurance
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • Tuition reimbursement
