Job description

The Mechanical Engineering Intern at Spudnik Equipment Company is responsible for the design and engineering of structural and component parts for agricultural equipment that will plant, harvest, transport and handle potatoes and other crops. This position combines hands-on problem-solving with engineering design. The Mechanical Engineering Intern collaborates closely with senior engineers on assigned projects. Tasks and projects typically include design, testing, documentation, and production support. Must be willing and able to work both in office and outdoors when required while demonstrating high levels of responsibility and accountability.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Assist engineers with design of agricultural equipment and components using requirements provided by sales staff, customers, service technicians, and management.
  • Assist senior engineers with stress calculations in critical design areas to support equipment safety and quality.
  • Support troubleshooting of structural and design problems on existing machines using feedback provided by sales staff, customers, service technicians, production personnel, and management.
  • Present options of the project to senior engineers to help find the best solution for Spudnik.
  • Use designated CAD systems to assist with design improvements and upgrades to current equipment as well as prototype machines under the direction of a senior engineer.
  • Create, maintain, and provide complete and accurate documentation of designs including schematics, prints, diagrams, quality check sheets, and bills of material.
  • Track assigned tasks and deliverables and communicate progress to the supervising engineer.
  • Exhibit professionalism, integrity, and accountability in all interactions and responsibilities.
  • Role involves medium physical work, including lifting, climbing, and working in varied indoor/outdoor conditions with exposure to temperature extremes, noise, moving mechanical parts, and occasional fumes or dust.

  • Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.
  • Current enrollment in Mechanical Engineering degree program.
  • Foundational knowledge and understanding of mechanical principles and applications;
  • Basic knowledge of hydraulic, electric and electronic schematics;
  • Background in agricultural industry preferred, but not required;
  • Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic, critical thinking, and analytical skills;
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • Ability to read and interpret instructional drawings and schematics;
  • Ability to effectively work with CAD systems, spreadsheets, word processing documents, and other applicable computer systems and software.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting or standing at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Regular lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of materials weighing up to 50 lbs, performed safely and as part of normal duties.
