Job description

General Summary:

The OSP Designer position will perform a variety of technical and design duties utilizing internal software related to the design of outside plant (OSP) telecommunication projects including but not limited to the design/layout of fiber, preparation of engineering drawings, interaction with customers/developers and field audits. This position is 80% travel and will be based out of one of our office locations - Bismarck, ND, Horace, ND, or Denver, CO.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide design, plans, specifications, reports, maps, schedules, estimates, data collection, and documents and agreements as needed
  • Use internal software and equipment to prepare and revise technical drawings using company established standard procedures
  • Handle multiple task/project assignments with the ability to prioritize the level of effort required for each assignment
  • Respond to client requests and inquiries that may affect existing OSP cable facilities
  • Assist engineers and project managers with relocating existing buried cables. Prepare relocation design, easement, permit and construction cost estimates and schedules
  • Prepare alignment and splicing design details
  • Understand right of way and easements to properly process the required documents
  • Collaborate with design team to solve design issues
  • Communicate consistently with the project manager, client and contractor
  • Read and interpret construction plans to assist with client management and effectively communicate to answer inquiries from coworkers, clients, or the public
  • Having a strong work ethic and be a self-starter, able to effectively manage multiple priorities and adapt to change within a fast-paced environment
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate motorized vehicles
  • Regular, reliable, consistent and punctual attendance is required
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required to fulfill job function or as assigned


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and experience in the engineering and/or construction of aerial, underground copper and fiber facilities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, ESRI GIS, Google Earth and CAD systems
  • Demonstrate strong communications skills with the ability to perform field site meetings with developers, customers, local agencies, and internal team members
  • Providing support and service through excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrating excellent listening skills and the ability to ask probing questions, and understand concerns to reach a mutually beneficial resolution
  • Proficient in all aspects of aerial construction including span lengths, pole loading, anchoring, guying, and attachment heights
  • Ability to become familiar with the plans and specifications, maps, and related material for each project and be able to utilize the information appropriately
  • Ability to work independently, provide leadership, mentor and direct others on projects
  • Demonstrate the ability to accept responsibility for and work under occasional stressful situations with frequent interruptions
  • Demonstrate desire to learn new skills as technologies change

Education and Experience:

  • Associate degree in telecommunications, drafting technology or a related field
  • Experience in fiber design and construction management including understanding of aerial, underground, OSP fiber and substructure design
  • Knowledge of telephone industry standards, local telecom practices and procedures, local city state and governmental rules and regulations
  • Experience with OSP database applications
