Job description

(OSP) Outside Plant Designer

Engineering / Infrastructure InfoWest

Location: St. George, UT

Job Type: Full-time, 40 hours/week

Compensation: $27-$30/hour

About InfoWest

InfoWest is an industry leader in internet service, delivering reliable wireless and fiber-optic internet solutions for over 30 years. Based in St. George, Utah, we proudly serve communities across southern and central Utah, as well as Overton, Nevada. Now a subsidiary of Boston Omaha Corporation (NYSE: BOC), InfoWest is rapidly expanding its fiber-optic network to meet growing demand, and our Engineering and Infrastructure team designs the network that makes that expansion possible.

Our mission is simple: "To Provide the Ultimate Internet Experience, One Customer at a Time."

About the Role

We're looking for an Outside Plant (OSP) Designer to be responsible for our fiber bid and high-level design process. Your core responsibility will be preparing complete fiber bid packages: designing cost-effective routes, building equipment lists, generating cost estimates, and getting designs ready for planner review and construction.

That's the starting point, not the ceiling. We'll cross-train you into the full range of what our team does, including detailed low-level designs, splice plans, and conduit plans. If you're strong on fundamentals but newer to some areas, we'll train you, and we expect you to grow into them.

Core Responsibilities (Day One Focus)

  • Prepare OSP fiber bids and high-level designs from assignment through approval, considering lowest-cost routing and current and future service locations
  • Build equipment lists and cost estimates as part of each design
  • Submit designs for review, incorporate redlines, and generate final bid deliverables
  • Track and manage assignments in our project management software through each stage of the workflow
  • Communicate design status, questions, and potential issues proactively

Additional Responsibilities (Cross-Training)

As you cross-train, you'll take on these areas as part of your regular responsibilities:

  • Build fully engineered plans: construction plans, splice/splitter plans, and circuit creation in Vetro FiberMap
  • Draft conduit plans from power plans (joint utility coordination), including open-trench reviews and post-construction redline updates
  • Perform site verification of vault placement, pole conditions, and trench/bore feasibility
  • Keep Vetro current: construction status, circuit status, splice documentation, and construction photos
  • Serve as a back-up for permitting: assist with or cover permit creation, submission, and status tracking when needed

Required Qualifications

  • Experience with OSP fiber design (backbone, distribution, conduit, and drop networks) or closely related utility/telecom design work
  • Proficiency with GIS-based fiber design platforms (Vetro FiberMap preferred) or demonstrated ability to learn quickly
  • Strong attention to detail and comfort managing multiple concurrent projects
  • Clear, proactive communication: you flag issues early, confirm priorities when assigned work, and keep stakeholders updated without being asked
  • Ability to work within established design standards and processes, and to raise improvement ideas through the right channels

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD (DWG/DXF)
  • Experience preparing fiber bids or cost estimates for an ISP, telecom, or fiber construction firm
  • Familiarity with QGIS or ArcGIS, including georeferencing CAD drawings
  • Understanding of fiber splicing, splitter architecture, and network connectivity
  • Experience with permitting, Blue Stakes/utility locates, or joint utility coordination
  • Experience with Excel or other spreadsheet software
  • Experience with Adobe products such as Acrobat
  • Any construction or install or other relevant field experience is a plus

Employment Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record (site verification involves driving to job sites)
  • Must pass a background check and drug test

Benefits Package

At InfoWest, we prioritize our employees' well-being and career growth. Our comprehensive benefits package includes:

  • 401(k) Plan with Employer Matching - helping you secure your future with matching contributions
  • Comprehensive Health Insurance - ensuring you and your family stay healthy and covered
  • Dental and Life Insurance - affordable coverage for peace of mind
  • Paid Time Off (PTO) - accrue more PTO with each year of service and roll over unused PTO
  • Paid Sick Days - take the time you need to recover
  • Seven Paid Holidays Per Year
  • Employee Internet Discount - save on your personal internet service
  • Discounted Internet for Family & Friends
  • Fully Provided Tools - all necessary equipment and software supplied by InfoWest
  • Family-Oriented and Stable Work Environment - a supportive culture that values work-life balance

What Success Looks Like

Early on, success is independently producing complete, accurate bid packages that pass review with minimal redlines. Over time, it's steadily expanding into the rest of our design workflow, from engineered plans to conduit plans to keeping Vetro documentation current, until you can carry a project through whatever stage it needs. We're a small team building out our standards and processes, so consistent execution, follow-through, and clean documentation matter as much as design skill.
