To thrive as an OSP (Outside Plant) Designer, you need a solid understanding of telecommunications infrastructure, fiber optic and copper network design, and relevant engineering principles, typically supported by experience in drafting or telecom design. Proficiency with CAD software, GIS mapping tools, and knowledge of industry standards such as BICSI or certifications like FTTx are highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and attention to detail help OSP Designers collaborate with field crews, engineers, and project managers. These skills ensure that network designs are accurate, cost-effective, and compliant with safety and regulatory requirements, directly impacting project success and customer satisfaction.
An OSP (Outside Plant) Designer is responsible for planning, designing, and documenting telecommunications infrastructure, such as fiber optic and copper networks, outside of buildings. They create detailed construction plans, ensure compliance with industry standards, and collaborate with engineers, surveyors, and permitting agencies. OSP Designers often encounter challenges such as navigating complex right-of-way issues, adhering to local permitting processes, and designing routes around existing utilities and natural obstacles. They address these challenges by working closely with municipal authorities, utility companies, and landowners, as well as leveraging advanced mapping software to identify optimal paths. Attention to detail and proactive communication with project teams help prevent costly delays and ensure successful project execution. Continuous learning and staying updated on industry standards also empower OSP Designers to efficiently solve problems as they arise.

Experience: 3+ years in OSP telecommunications or related field using AutoCAD.
Skills: Proficiency in AutoCAD, MS Office, Google Earth, Bluebeam and Adobe. GIS is a plus. Strong organizational and planning skills. Ability to interpret construction documents and collaborate effectively.
Work Conditions:
Office-based (90%) with occasional travel (<25%)
