Position Summary

IQ Fiber is seeking an OSP Designer responsible for the design, drafting, and documentation of IQ Fiber's fiber optic network, including outside plant, inside plant, and customer premises. This role communicates with field and contract personnel to manage design changes, finalize as-builts, and load all documentation into Vetro Fibermap.

The ideal candidate brings strong OSP FTTH/FTTP design skills with a solid understanding of OSP construction and engineering principles. This role also supports and mentors other designers, contributing to quality and consistency across all design deliverables.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and plan all fiber routes, hub cabinet locations, and ISP patch panel diagrams and cable rack layouts; prepare drawings and plans to support network expansions.
  • Obtain and enter all fiber as-builts (FUDs) from in-house staff and contractors into Vetro; support the Manager, Project Design & Documentation and maintain proficiency in Vetro workflows.
  • Generate Bills of Materials, splice sheets, and other supporting documentation for design; develop and implement network nomenclature in collaboration with the engineering team.
  • Document and maintain accurate records for all outside plant, customer premises, and central office facilities; create and implement adds, moves, and change policies to maintain proper plant facility records.
  • Review completed designs for errors and efficiency; ensure all design specifications and quality standards are consistently maintained.
  • Analyze OTDR traces, evaluate fiber characteristics, and document test results; assist in troubleshooting fiber circuits for light and path continuity.
  • Update monthly grid maps for Sunshine 811; adhere to easement, right-of-way, and permit documentation requirements.
  • Advise, train, and guide other designers as needed; support specialists and senior leadership with fiber design documents.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; 1+ year of OSP engineering or telecommunications experience preferred.
  • Experience designing and/or constructing telecommunications fiber networks; strong understanding of OSP FTTH/FTTP design methodology and construction practices.
  • 2–3 years of AutoCAD or equivalent drafting program experience; 2–3 years of technical writing experience.
  • Experience with Vetro, 3-GIS, Microstation, Spatial, or similar GIS and desktop tools preferred; knowledge of easement, right-of-way, and permit documentation preferred.
  • Exceptional proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
  • Ability to work independently, think creatively and strategically, and communicate effectively across teams.
  • Ability to maintain strong organizational and time management skills with high attention to detail.

What Success Looks Like

  • All design deliverables meet applicable regulatory requirements, with compliance maintained consistently across every project phase to reduce risk and avoid rework.
  • Design documentation — including drawings, BOMs, and splice diagrams — is detailed, accurate, and kept current using CAD and GIS tools, supporting reliable records and smooth project handoffs.
  • Junior designers receive consistent technical guidance and mentorship, raising the quality and consistency of design outputs across the team and building long-term capability.
  • Cross-functional collaboration is strong and proactive, with design challenges resolved early and clear alignment maintained between design intent and field construction to prevent costly gaps.
