Job description

We are looking for an Associate Director to join our Origination team. The Origination team leads Scout's efforts to develop and cultivate client relationships, maintain market intelligence, and identify offtakers for our growing portfolio of renewable energy development projects. We integrate knowledge from other teams at Scout to develop a pricing strategy and deal structure that meets the needs of our clients and meets our internal underwriting standards. As Scout's Associate Director, you will play an important role in power marketing efforts at Scout. You will focus on the PJM, ERCOT, and MISO markets and lead the East Origination team, including guiding and mentoring a Sr Associate on the East Origination team.
You will report to the Senior Director of Origination and work closely with other members of the Origination team. You will collaborate extensively with team members across the company as Scout continues to grow our wind, solar, and storage pipeline.
Primary Responsibilities
You are a deal-oriented, analytically minded professional who likes to work with a wide range of people and are passionate about the ways that renewable energy will make the world a better place. You have a good understanding of risk in contractual terms and are creative in the way you manage that risk while meeting different clients' needs. Here are all the responsibilities we'll trust you with:
Connections
  • Maintain your extensive existing network with utilities, C&Is, retailers and other renewable energy industry players and build your network through direct outreach. Call upon your network as needed.
  • Develop a strategy to expand existing relationships with appropriate utilities, C&Is, and other buyers to understand market needs.
  • Mentor junior staff in external relationship building.
  • Guide the team's conference and organization strategy for the East region, ensuring information from conference attendance is summarized for the team and incorporated into Salesforce. Establish a strong Scout presence at conferences and other industry events.
  • Ensure Salesforce is updated for all East region efforts.

Market Intelligence
  • Own the our pricing intel for the East region and ensure its completeness and usefulness.
  • Guide processes to track key market trends and client requirements (e.g., ISO requirements, new technologies) that are shaping contractual structures and integrate that knowledge to suggest structures that equitably distribute risk.
  • Identify new approaches and sources for customer, market, and tariff analyses.
  • Provide market intelligence on unique offtake agreements like proxy revenue swaps, financial hedging, and REC sales.
  • Review and provide input on project pricing through the lens of Origination. Review and update processes as needed.

Market Readiness
  • Maintain and suggest updates to the market readiness process; ask detailed questions about the readiness to market a project.
  • Guide and review the offtake analysis at various project tiers.
  • Be able to discuss advanced late-stage projects with potential off-takers.

RFP Responses
  • Lead RFP go/no go decisions based on market intelligence. Provide suggestions for RFP process improvement.
  • Review and provide feedback on proposals prior to sharing with potential offtakers. Provide guidance on more complicated proposals.
  • Lead the East origination team to successful proposals through guidance and input vs doing
  • Ensure RFP follow-up is occurring. Provide overall direction to shortlist slides and loss analysis.
  • During negotiations, lead the offtaker relationship and support the negotiations, working closely with the Structuring team.

Cross-Functional Leadership & Collaboration
  • Own, coordinate, and participate in complex, cross-functional initiatives by translating organizational priorities into clear plans, timelines, and deliverables, and proactively managing dependencies across teams to ensure work stays aligned with Scout's broader goals.
  • Build, sustain, and engage in effective cross-functional working groups by intentionally engaging partners with a meaningful range of experience, expertise, perspectives, and problem-solving approaches to drive stronger outcomes.
  • Lead and effectively engage in cross-team meetings and forums with clear purpose and structure, balancing competing stakeholder needs while guiding groups toward decisions, next steps, and accountability.
  • Act as a connector and point of integration across teams by ensuring information flows clearly, risks and tradeoffs are addressed early, and teams understand how their work fits into the larger system.
  • Navigate ambiguity and competing priorities by exercising sound judgment, adapting plans as needed, and maintaining forward momentum.
  • Model inclusive collaboration and influence without authority, creating space for diverse viewpoints while driving alignment and commitment to shared outcomes.

General
  • Follow our Origination team's processes and procedures to ensure consistency across the team and suggest updates and refinements to improve the processes.
  • Work with junior staff to resolve issues and elevate issues as needed.

Requirements
To be a great fit for this role, you have:
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; MBA or other Master's Degree is a plus.
  • 6-8 years of power experience with 4+ years in middle marketing or origination work in the power sector; renewables-specific experience is strongly preferred.
  • Current knowledge of renewable energy markets (ISOs/RTOs and WECC) and key drivers (e.g., policies, technologies, dynamics in local markets), especially for wind, solar, and storage.
  • Ability to cultivate relationships with potential counterparties and to leverage your own book of strong client relationships across markets: multiple ISOs/RTOs, retailers, utilities (IOU, munis, and coops), and commercial and industrial clients.
  • Previous experience supporting successful client negotiations, including contractual analysis; previous deal leadership is a plus.

  • Willing and available to travel as needed (15 - 20%)
