What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an OR assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an OR Assistant, you need a solid understanding of surgical procedures, sterilization techniques, and patient care, often supported by a high school diploma and on-the-job training or a surgical technologist certification. Familiarity with surgical instruments, operating room equipment, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is typically required. What is an OR assistant?

OR Assistants, also known as Operating Room Assistants or Surgical Assistants, are healthcare professionals who support surgeons, nurses, and other medical staff during surgical procedures. Their responsibilities include preparing the operating room, sterilizing equipment, transporting patients, and assisting with positioning and supplies. OR Assistants play a crucial role in ensuring surgeries run smoothly and safely by maintaining a sterile environment and helping the surgical team as needed.

How do you become an operating room assistant?

To become an operating room assistant, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent and may pursue relevant certifications such as Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Certified Operating Room Technician. They are responsible for preparing and organizing surgical instruments, ensuring all equipment functions properly, and supporting the surgical team efficiently. Adaptability and strong communication skills are essential, as the pace and requirements can change rapidly during procedures. Overcoming these challenges requires a keen attention to detail and the ability to remain calm in high-stress environments.
