Job description

Overview

FMI's Training Institute Performance programs team is seeking a Director of Business Growth & Operations to own and scale the business performance of FMI's experiential learning programs - the Project Manager Academy (PMA) and Construction Business Academy (CBA), with a mandate to develop and launch new offerings over time. This role is accountable for revenue growth, profitability, forecasting, and business development, operating each program as a business. The Director builds and leads the team and systems that support scale, and partners closely with subject-matter facilitators to bring programs to market - with the opportunity to facilitate personally as capacity allows.

For more than 70 years, FMI has partnered with organizations across the built environment to develop exceptional leaders and build stronger, more profitable businesses. Experience in or adjacent to the built environment is preferred, but strong program or business-unit leadership experience from other industries will be considered.

This is a full-time position based in either our Raleigh, NC or Denver, CO office. Travel is approximately 15-25%, with increased travel in the initial months to support onboarding.

**Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis. FMI is unable to provide visa sponsorship at this time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end program performance across assigned offerings, operating each program as a business with accountability for revenue growth, profitability, and continuous improvement.
  • Own programs' financial performance, including forecasting, budgeting, pricing strategy, and margin management.
  • Lead business development for assigned programs, including client discovery, proposal development, and pricing strategy, with accountability for pipeline performance and enrollment targets.
  • Set growth strategy and roadmap for expanding into additional performance and technical offerings.
  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing team of Program Operations Managers, Coordinators, and subcontracted facilitators, setting clear expectations, driving accountability, and ensuring operational discipline.
  • Foster a culture of ongoing feedback and coaching within the team, actively investing time in developing direct reports and addressing improvement areas as they arise.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Marketing, Consulting, and Operations to drive program visibility, demand generation, and execution excellence.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve efficiency, scalability, and overall program impact through systems, processes, and operational improvements.
  • Own the end-to-end client experience, ensuring programs deliver outcomes that drive retention, repeat business, and long-term client relationships.
  • Partner with facilitators and subject-matter experts to ensure content and delivery quality align with client and market needs.
  • Contribute to facilitation and content refinement, ensuring alignment with built-environment client needs.

Qualifications

  • Experience owning or operating a P&L, business unit, or revenue-generating program required.
  • 7+ years of experience building, scaling, or operating a business, program portfolio, or revenue-generating unit - regardless of industry - including direct team leadership and P&L or growth accountability.
  • Proven experience managing complex programs or business units with multiple stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage financial performance, including budgeting, forecasting, and driving revenue or margin growth.
  • Demonstrated experience leading business development, including pipeline management, proposal development, and enrollment or sales targets.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, marketing, education, or a related field required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience in the built environment, including construction or related industries,
  • Facilitation, coaching, or leadership development experience a plus, but not required.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach and develop direct reports, with a track record of investing in team members' growth.
  • Strong strategic thinking, problem solving, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Salesforce, NetSuite, and Cvent.
  • Ability to operate effectively in dynamic, fast paced, and ambiguous environments with minimal direction.
