Westerner Park is seeking an experienced and hands-on Assistant Manager, Facilities & Safety Operations to help keep our facilities safe, compliant, and event-ready. This leadership role is responsible for supporting the daily operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of Westerner Park's buildings, grounds, infrastructure, and safety programs.
Working closely with the General Manager, Facilities & Park Operations, the Assistant Manager provides leadership to maintenance and grounds teams while coordinating contractors, preventative maintenance, capital projects, and occupational health and safety initiatives. This role combines technical expertise, operational planning, and people leadership to ensure Westerner Park delivers exceptional experiences for guests, employees, tenants, and event organizers.
Reporting to the General Manager, Facilities & Park Operations, the Assistant Manager, Facilities & Safety Operations is responsible for the following:
Health, Safety & Compliance
  • Support and lead Westerner Park's occupational health and safety program by coordinating workplace inspections, hazard assessments, toolbox meetings, Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHAs), incident reporting, safety training, audits, and certification tracking.
  • Chair and coordinate the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC), including meeting facilitation, documentation, recommendations, and follow-up actions.
  • Conduct facility inspections and identify hazards, maintenance deficiencies, and operational risks while ensuring corrective actions are completed.
  • Maintain accurate health and safety documentation, inspection records, compliance reports, and training records to support regulatory requirements and organizational compliance.
  • Ensure employees, contractors, and vendors comply with all health, safety, environmental, permitting, and site-specific work requirements.
  • Serve as a key on-site contact for regulators, inspectors, contractors, insurance representatives, and external partners as required.
Facility & Grounds Operations
  • Oversee the daily maintenance, repair, and operation of Westerner Park's buildings, infrastructure, mechanical and plumbing systems, utilities, parking areas, walkways, grounds, and RV Resort.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor preventative maintenance schedules and work plans to maximize asset life, improve reliability, and reduce operational downtime.
  • Respond to urgent operational issues by troubleshooting building systems, coordinating repairs, and implementing effective solutions.
  • Ensure facilities remain safe, accessible, clean, visually appealing, and event-ready for employees, guests, tenants, volunteers, and event organizers.
  • Support sustainability initiatives through effective utility management, equipment planning, preventative maintenance, and cost-conscious operational practices.
Leadership & Team Development
  • Supervise maintenance, trades, and grounds employees, ensuring work is planned, prioritized, completed safely, and aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring, performance feedback, and training to foster a collaborative, accountable, and safety-focused team.
  • Coordinate daily work assignments, work orders, materials, equipment, permits, contractor activities, quality standards, and project timelines.
  • Provide leadership continuity by acting on behalf of the General Manager, Facilities & Park Operations when required.
Administration & Operational Support
  • Monitor and report on maintenance, compliance, safety, inspection, and project performance metrics.
  • Maintain accurate records related to preventative maintenance, contractor activities, inspections, certifications, work orders, equipment, and completed maintenance activities.
  • Coordinate contractor and vendor services, ensuring work quality, schedule adherence, safety compliance, and contractual obligations are met.
  • Support budget planning, procurement activities, preventative maintenance planning, infrastructure renewal, and capital improvement projects.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to ensure facility operations effectively support organizational priorities, events, guest experiences, and public services.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the ongoing operational needs of Westerner Park.
This role is expected to adapt to organizational priorities and operational demands while providing leadership that supports the continued success of Westerner Park.
What You’ll Bring
  • Journeyman trade certification (e.g., plumbing, mechanical, electrical, or building systems), diploma, or degree in Facility Management, Building Operations, Occupational Health & Safety, Project Management, or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Minimum five (5) years of progressive experience in facility operations, maintenance, trades supervision, construction, or occupational health and safety.
  • Experience leading maintenance, trades, contractor, or grounds teams in a complex industrial, commercial, public-facing, or multi-building environment.
  • Strong knowledge of preventative maintenance, building systems, asset management, Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation, and safe work practices.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating contractors, maintenance programs, capital projects, inspections, and safety compliance initiatives.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), Microsoft Office Suite, and related software.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's licence.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, and other relevant safety certifications, or the ability to obtain them within a specified timeframe.
