What is an on call fractional CFO?

An On Call Fractional CFO is a highly experienced financial executive who provides part-time, as-needed financial leadership to businesses. Unlike a full-time CFO, a fractional CFO works with multiple clients and is available on demand to offer strategic financial guidance, manage cash flow, oversee financial reporting, and assist with business planning. This flexible arrangement allows small and mid-sized companies to access top-tier financial expertise without the expense of a full-time hire. On Call Fractional CFOs are especially valuable during periods of growth, fundraising, or financial restructuring.

How does an on call fractional CFO typically collaborate with existing finance teams and company leadership?

An On Call Fractional CFO works closely with both the finance team and company leadership to provide strategic financial guidance, often acting as a bridge between daily operations and long-term planning. They usually join leadership meetings to review financial performance, offer insights on budgeting, cash flow, and fundraising, and may oversee or mentor in-house accountants or controllers. Communication and adaptability are key, as the role often requires quickly integrating into existing team structures and tailoring support to evolving business needs. This collaborative approach ensures that both tactical and strategic financial objectives are met efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an on call fractional CFO, and why are they important?

To excel as an On Call Fractional CFO, you need a strong background in finance, accounting, and strategic business planning, usually supported by a CPA, MBA, or similar credentials. Familiarity with financial reporting software, ERP systems, and data analytics tools is essential. Exceptional communication, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability set top performers apart, as they must quickly assess and address diverse client needs. These skills are crucial for delivering high-impact financial leadership and driving business growth in dynamic, often fast-changing environments.

Job description

Fractional Chief Financial Officer (CFO) CAP3 | Wilmington, NC

CAP3 is not a traditional accounting firmโ€”and this is not a traditional finance role.

Weโ€™re looking for a Fractional Chief Financial Officerwho loves business. Someone who can think strategically and roll up their sleeves. Someone who gets just as excited about improving a clientโ€™s cash flow as they do helping them make a big decision. If youโ€™re the kind of person who wants to sit in a boardroom all day, this probably isnโ€™t for you. If you want to be in the business, helping owners actually run and grow itโ€”keep reading.

What Youโ€™ll Actually Be Doing

Youโ€™ll serve as a financial leader for multiple growing businesses, acting as a true partner to the ownerโ€”not just an advisor from a distance.

  • Work directly with business owners to understand how their business really operates
  • Turnfinancials into clear, actionable insights (not just reports)
  • Own cash flow, forecasting, and profitability strategy
  • Build and refine KPIs that actually drive behavior and results
  • Help clients make decisions around hiring, pricing, expansion, and investment Identify problems earlyโ€”and help fix them (not just point them out)
  • Lead client meetings and be a trusted voice in the room
  • Collaborate with our internal team to ensure execution matches strategy
Who This Role Is Perfect For
  • Youโ€™ve worked in finance, accounting, or advisoryโ€”but always wanted to be closer to the business side
  • You enjoy problem-solving more than just reporting
  • Youโ€™re comfortable switching between big-picture thinking and detailed execution
  • You donโ€™t mind getting into the weeds when needed
  • You can communicate financial concepts in a way that actually makes sense to business owners You take ownership and donโ€™t wait to be told what to do
Who This Role Is NOT For
  • Someone looking for a purely corporate or siloed CFO role
  • Someone who only wants to reviewfinancials, not engage in operations
  • Someone uncomfortable with ambiguity, variety, or fast-moving environments
What You Bring
  • Strong financial foundation (accounting,FP&A, or similar background)
  • Experience with financial statements, forecasting, and cash flow management
  • Ability to connect numbers to real-world business decisions
  • Comfort working across multiple clients or projects
  • Experience with tools likeQuickBooks Online and Excel Strong communication skillsโ€”you can lead a room, not just analyze data
Our Core Values โ€“ The CAP3 EDGE

Empowerment โ€“ We help people achieve more than they thought possible

Diligence โ€“ We own the details and deliver with discipline

Generosity โ€“ We go above and beyond for clients and each other

Excellence โ€“ We hold a high standard because it matters

Why CAP3

You wonโ€™t be stuck in a back-office role here.

Youโ€™ll be in conversations that matter, helping real businesses grow, make decisions, and succeed.

This is a role for someone who wants to build, influence, and be part of somethingโ€”not just report on it.
