Job description

As a special projects carpenter, you will perform various fabrication functions such as finish carpentry, cabinet building, painting, faux finishing, mold making, furniture finishing, wood/metal studs with sheetrock, and other decorative work. You will build exhibits, exhibit elements, props, furniture, and other custom installations for exhibitions and other events. In doing so, you will work with a variety of materials such as wood, metal, plastics, concrete, foam board, paint or stain, and other finishing products. Responsibilities include the safe and effective operation of various hand tools and power equipment; the inspection and repair or installation of signs, bulletin boards, and other building specialties; and the completion of major and minor building repairs.
In this role, you will follow directions or cut lists and ensure your work conforms to all local building codes. You will also read design drawings and blueprints to produce exhibits and exhibit elements. As assigned, you will complete work order requests and document problems that need correction in the work order system. Among other duties, you will meet schedules and timelines, coordinate work with other areas of physical resources, and follow all SCAD and OSHA policies and procedures. Additionally, you will advise your supervisor when emergencies occur or assistance is needed from other departments and be on call to handle emergencies.
The ideal candidate can follow building plans, demonstrating an excellent attention to detail. They can maintain a professional appearance at all times and work well with others. The candidate is also able to thrive in fast-paced work environment. They will be expected to drive to multiple SCAD buildings to perform work.
Minimum qualifications:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED), at least two years of related experience and/or training, or the equivalent combination of both
  • Knowledge of shop equipment and proper operation, including woodworking, furniture making, cabinet making, metal and plastics fabrication, historic restoration, or other related experience
  • Ability to stand, bend, and lift throughout the day as well as perform heavy manual labor in a variety of weather conditions

Certificates, licenses, and registrations:
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to pass DOT medical exam

Travel required:
  • 20-40%

Work hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
