Employer & Industry UsageCommonly employed in oil terminals, refineriesWorks in similar facilities, often under supervision

The Oil Terminal Loading Master focuses on supervising and coordinating loading operations, ensuring safety and efficiency. In contrast, the Oil Terminal Operator handles the day-to-day operational tasks. Both roles require safety certifications and are integral to terminal operations, but the Loading Master holds a supervisory position, while the Operator performs operational duties.

What are some typical challenges faced by Oil Terminal Loading Masters during cargo transfer operations?

Oil Terminal Loading Masters often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple stakeholders, managing tight schedules, and ensuring strict compliance with safety and environmental regulations. They must stay vigilant for any operational or weather-related issues that could impact cargo transfer, and are responsible for resolving discrepancies between documentation and actual product movement. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential for addressing unexpected situations and maintaining smooth, safe operations.

What are Oil Terminal Loading Masters?

Oil Terminal Loading Masters are professionals responsible for overseeing the safe and efficient transfer of petroleum products between storage tanks and transportation vessels, such as ships or trucks, at oil terminals. They coordinate loading and unloading operations, ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations, and communicate with terminal operators, vessel crews, and other stakeholders. Their role is critical in preventing spills, managing documentation, and ensuring that all procedures follow industry standards and regulatory requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Oil Terminal Loading Master, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Oil Terminal Loading Master, you need in-depth knowledge of petroleum products, terminal operations, and safety regulations, typically supported by relevant industry experience and sometimes specific certifications (like HAZMAT or marine operations). Familiarity with terminal automation systems, inventory management software, and product measurement tools is essential. Strong communication, attention to detail, and leadership skills help coordinate teams and ensure compliance during loading and unloading operations. These skills are crucial to maintain operational safety, prevent environmental incidents, and ensure efficient product transfer in the oil terminal environment.

Job description

Role Overview

We are seeking Planners / Schedulers to support upcoming Midstream Oil & Gas initiatives. This intake covers a variety of midstream assets, including major pipeline linear construction, compressor/pumping station expansions, asset integrity programs, and terminal/storage facility maintenance.

In this role, you will be the core driver of the integrated project schedule—managing complex logic, tracking multi-disciplinary progress, and proactively managing the critical path from regulatory permitting through commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Integrated Master Schedule Management: Develop and maintain Level 1 through Level 4/5 logic-linked schedules in Primavera P6, incorporating Right-of-Way (ROW) acquisition, environmental permitting, engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning.
  • Linear & Facility Scheduling: Balance the unique scheduling demands of linear pipeline construction (ditching, stringing, welding, laying) alongside stationary facility builds (compressor stations, meter stations, tank farms).
  • Progress Measurement & EVM: Monitor physical field progress against the baseline schedule. Develop and analyze S-curves, track quantities (e.g., footage of pipe welded/laid, tons of structural steel), and apply Earned Value Management (EVM) principles.
  • Resource and Constraint Analysis: Identify and resolve schedule constraints, resource density bottlenecks, and material delivery slippages. Perform regular Critical Path Method (CPM) and float analysis to keep projects on track.
  • Outage & Interconnect Planning: Collaborate with operations and engineering to plan tightly scheduled tie-ins, system hot taps, and facility shutdowns/outages to minimize throughput disruptions.
  • Stakeholder Reporting: Interface regularly with Project Managers, Chief Inspectors, Environmental teams, Supply Chain, and EPC contractors to run schedule review meetings and deliver clear progress reports.

Position Requirements & Qualifications

  • Industry Experience: 3+ years of dedicated planning/scheduling experience specifically within Midstream Oil & Gas (pipelines, terminals, gas processing, compressor/pumping stations).
  • Software Mastery: Advanced proficiency with Primavera P6 is required. Experience with linear scheduling tools like TILOS is a strong asset.
  • Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of midstream construction sequencing, hydrostatic testing procedures, horizontal directional drilling (HDD) timelines, and commissioning phases.
