What is ocean shipping?

Ocean shipping refers to the transportation of goods and cargo by sea using large ships and vessels. It is one of the most cost-effective and efficient methods for moving large quantities of products across long distances, especially between continents. Ocean shipping plays a crucial role in global trade, handling the majority of international freight. The process typically involves booking space on a vessel, loading containers at ports, and managing the logistics of delivery to the final destination.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in ocean shipping?

To thrive in Ocean Shipping, you need a solid understanding of international logistics, maritime regulations, and supply chain management, often supported by degrees in logistics or maritime studies. Familiarity with shipping management software, tracking systems, and relevant certifications like the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code are commonly required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for coordinating shipments and liaising with global partners. These competencies ensure efficient, compliant, and timely movement of goods across international waters, which is vital for global trade.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in ocean shipping, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in ocean shipping logistics often encounter challenges such as unpredictable weather conditions, port congestion, and regulatory compliance across international borders. Addressing these issues typically involves staying updated on global regulations, leveraging technology for real-time tracking, and maintaining strong communication with port authorities and partners. Building flexibility into shipping schedules and fostering collaborative relationships with freight forwarders and customs brokers can also help mitigate delays and disruptions.

Ocean Shipping involves the transportation of goods via ships across international waters, focusing on cargo movement and vessel operations. Freight Forwarders coordinate and arrange shipments, including booking cargo space, documentation, and customs clearance. Understanding these roles helps in choosing the right career or service for international cargo needs.

As the company continues to grow under new leadership, we are focused on strengthening our brand presence, customer engagement, and community connection through consistent storytelling and marketing efforts.

Position Overview:

The Sales Executive brings in new customers, takes care of current customers, and helps the company meet sales goals. This role uses simple Six Sigma ideas: understand customer needs, follow clear steps, reduce errors, solve problems early, and improve results over time. The person in this role must communicate clearly, stay organized, and understand ocean shipping services.

Key Responsibilities:

Client Relationship Management

  • Build strong relationships with current customers through regular follow-up and clear communication.

  • Find new customers, qualify leads, and turn good opportunities into new business.

Sales Strategy and Execution

  • Follow a clear sales process to reach revenue and customer growth goals.
  • Review market trends, customer feedback, and competitor activity to find new opportunities.
  • Understand pricing and rates so quotes are accurate, competitive, and aligned with company services.
  • Look for delays, repeat issues, or waste in the sales process and suggest better ways of working.

Negotiation and Contracts

  • Discuss pricing and service terms with customers to reach fair and profitable agreements.
  • Make sure contracts are complete, correct, and follow company rules.
  • Reduce errors by checking details before contracts are sent or approved.

Promotion and Marketing

  • Explain the value of the company's shipping services in a clear and simple way.
  • Use presentations, meetings, and marketing materials to support sales efforts.
  • Attend trade shows and industry events to build relationships and generate leads.

Operational Coordination

  • Work closely with operations teams so customer needs are met on time and with fewer issues.
  • Share accurate booking and service details to help the team deliver smooth service.
  • Identify service problems early, help fix root causes, and support corrective action.

Reporting and Analysis

  • Track sales activity, revenue, quotes, and forecasts, and share updates with management.
  • Measure results against goals and use data to find gaps and improvement opportunities.
  • Maintain simple and accurate records to support better decisions.

Customer Support

  • Help customers with questions, issues, and complaints in a timely and professional way.
  • Prepare bookings, quotes, and service contracts accurately and on time.
  • Follow up after the sale to confirm satisfaction, solve open issues, and support repeat business.
  • Perform other assigned duties as needed.

Requirements:

  • Strong communication, relationship-building, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to identify sales opportunities, manage pipelines, and close new business.
  • Knowledge of freight forwarding, ocean shipping, logistics, or related transportation services preferred.
  • Comfortable preparing quotes, contracts, and customer correspondence accurately and on time.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn internal systems and CRM tools.
  • Ability to work independently, collaborate across teams, and represent the company professionally.
  • Must have a clean driving record.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor's degree in business, marketing, logistics, or a related field preferred.
  • 2+ years of sales, account management, customer service, or logistics experience preferred.
  • Experience in shipping, freight, transportation, or supply chain environments is a plus.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Creole skills are a plus for serving Caribbean markets.
