Job description

The Arc of Ocean County is seeking an energetic and compassionate Recreation Assistant to join our Family Support Department. This position supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities by creating meaningful recreational, social, and community-based experiences that promote inclusion, relationship-building, and personal growth throughout Ocean County.

This full-time role is ideal for someone who enjoys community engagement, leading activities, and helping individuals build confidence and social connections in a fun and supportive environment.

Position Details
  • Schedule: Tuesday through Friday | 1:00 PM – 9:00 PM
    Saturday | 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Pay Rate: Starting at $20.20 per hour, with opportunities to earn up to $24.20 per hour
  • Bi-weekly pay schedule
Essential Responsibilities
  • Support individuals with disabilities during recreational, social, and community-based activities throughout Ocean County.
  • Assist with organizing, coordinating, and leading group activities including dances, fitness programs, arts and crafts, cooking groups, community outings, and small group trips.
  • Promote community inclusion, social interaction, teamwork, and positive relationship-building among participants.
  • Provide transportation to activities and outings using agency vehicles.
  • Offer supervision, encouragement, and direct support during all recreational and community-based activities.
  • Encourage participation and engagement while serving as a positive role model for individuals receiving services.
  • Assist with event planning, scheduling, activity coordination, and overall program organization.
  • Support and provide guidance to Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) participating in recreation programming.
  • Maintain a safe, respectful, and engaging environment for all participants.

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Experience coordinating and leading recreational activities or group events.
  • Ability to mentor, support, and provide constructive feedback to staff members.
  • Previous leadership or lead staff experience preferred.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple activities and schedules effectively.
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Prior experience supporting individuals with disabilities required.
  • Valid New Jersey driver’s license in good standing required, with no more than five (5) points.
  • Demonstrated work stability preferred, including at least one (1) year with a previous employer.
