What is the NYU Nurse Residency Program?

The NYU Nurse Residency Program is a structured, year-long transition-to-practice program designed to support new graduate nurses as they begin their professional careers at NYU Langone Health. The program combines classroom learning, simulation training, and hands-on clinical experiences to help new nurses develop critical thinking, clinical skills, and confidence. It also provides mentorship and peer support, helping participants adjust to the demands of the nursing profession and a hospital environment. The goal is to ease the transition from student to professional nurse and improve retention and job satisfaction among new nurses.

What are some common challenges new nurses face during the NYU Nurse Residency Program, and how does the program support them?

New nurses in the NYU Nurse Residency Program often face challenges such as adjusting to the fast-paced hospital environment, managing complex patient care, and building confidence in clinical decision-making. The program addresses these challenges through structured mentorship, regular debriefings, and targeted educational sessions that focus on clinical skills, communication, and stress management. Residents are supported by experienced nurse educators and preceptors, fostering a collaborative environment that encourages growth and continuous learning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a participant in the NYU Nurse Residency Program, and why are they important?
