The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) employs nearly 2,300 team members operating nine institutions statewide, which house approximately 5,800 inmates. The department's focus includes inmate programming and education, physical and behavioral health care, re-entry services, and community programs, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). DUTIES:
  • Direct and oversee the organization's infection control and risk management programs.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, local, and ACA requirements.
  • Develop, implement, and deliver a broad range of clinical training programs focused on infection prevention, significant regulatory updates, and emerging infectious diseases.
  • Maintain and update all infection control policies and protocols at least annually, or more frequently as needed, to align with current evidence-based practices and clinical literature.
  • Oversee biohazardous waste management and ensure proper decontamination of medical and dental equipment in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Provide oversight of vaccine management programs, including storage and handling compliance, and distribution planning during seasonal increases in demand (e.g., influenza season).
  • Participate in onsite audits of facilities and contribute as an active member of the Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) team to support ongoing regulatory readiness and performance enhancement.
  • Prepare and present comprehensive monthly, quarterly, and annual reports, including the collection, analysis, and interpretation of clinical performance improvement data to identify gaps and drive quality initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Nursing Director and interdisciplinary clinical staff to develop and implement appropriate corrective action plans.
  • Utilize advanced Microsoft Excel skills to maintain, track, and trend infection control data.
  • Demonstrate a proactive, self-directed approach to identifying and implementing best practices grounded in evidence-based nursing.

Requirements / Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Nebraska or authority based on the Nurse Licensure Compact to practice as a Registered Nurse in Nebraska and one year of relevant experience,
Preferred Qualifications: Three years of correctional experience. Background in statistics and research. Proficient in Word and Excel, particularly writing programs and pivot tables. Proficient in obtaining and using necessary resources for research in the area of infection control (e.g., USPTF guidelines, CDC.gov).
Other: Must have a valid driver's license. Will complete two to four weeks of on-the-job training. Must submit to background security check. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the pre-employment medical examination and a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NDCS pre-service training program.
