What is an NPI Test Engineer?

An NPI (New Product Introduction) Test Engineer is a professional responsible for developing and validating test processes and equipment for new products before they go into mass production. They work closely with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure that products meet performance and reliability standards. Their role involves creating test plans, troubleshooting issues, and optimizing testing procedures to support a smooth product launch. NPI Test Engineers help bridge the gap between product development and manufacturing, ensuring that new products can be produced efficiently and meet quality expectations.

What are some typical challenges faced by an NPI Test Engineer during the product development cycle?

NPI (New Product Introduction) Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as rapidly adapting test procedures for evolving prototypes, balancing tight deadlines with thorough validation, and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams like design, manufacturing, and quality assurance. Managing changing specifications and troubleshooting unforeseen issues with new hardware or software are common aspects of the role. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential, as test engineers play a key part in ensuring products meet both performance and manufacturability goals before mass production.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an NPI Test Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an NPI Test Engineer, you need a solid background in electronics or engineering, strong problem-solving abilities, and experience with new product introduction processes. Familiarity with test automation tools, programming languages (such as Python or LabVIEW), and quality standards like ISO 9001 is typically required. Excellent communication, teamwork, and project management skills help you collaborate across engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams. These skills ensure efficient test development, smooth product launches, and high-quality outcomes in fast-paced manufacturing environments.

What is the difference between Npi Test Engineer vs Product Test Engineer?

Job description

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Global NPI Test Engineer to support New Product Introduction (NPI) activities across our international engineering and manufacturing operations.

This role is focused on developing and implementing robust test strategies, validation methodologies, and production test systems to ensure new products meet quality, reliability, regulatory, and customer requirements from concept through production launch.

The successful candidate will work closely with Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, and Operations teams to ensure products are designed for testability, manufacturability, and long-term reliability.

This is a highly collaborative international role requiring strong technical capability, structured problem-solving skills, and fluent English communication skills, both written and verbal.

Unlike traditional production test roles, this position is primarily focused on new product development, test architecture, product validation, and launch readiness rather than routine production support.

Key Responsibilities

New Product Introduction & Validation

  • Lead test engineering activities for New Product Introduction (NPI) projects from concept through production launch.
  • Develop product verification and validation strategies to ensure compliance with customer, regulatory, and performance requirements.
  • Support EVT, DVT, PVT, pilot builds, and manufacturing launch activities.
  • Ensure test requirements are identified early in the product development process.
  • Drive Design for Testability (DFT) reviews with product development teams.

Test Development & Automation

  • Define and develop production test strategies for new products.
  • Design, specify, and implement test fixtures, test equipment, and automated test solutions.
  • Develop test plans, test procedures, and acceptance criteria.
  • Support functional, electrical, environmental, reliability, and system-level testing activities.
  • Drive implementation of automated testing solutions to improve coverage, repeatability, and efficiency.

Risk Management & Product Quality

  • Participate in DFMEA and PFMEA activities to identify product and test-related risks.
  • Develop robust fault detection and error-proofing strategies within production test processes.
  • Analyze test data and identify product, process, or design weaknesses.
  • Ensure lessons learned are incorporated into future product and test designs.
  • Support root cause investigations using structured problem-solving methodologies.

Production Test Readiness

  • Support transfer of test equipment and processes to manufacturing sites globally.
  • Define calibration, maintenance, and validation requirements for production test systems.
  • Ensure production test solutions are scalable and capable of supporting volume manufacturing.
  • Support qualification, validation, and release of production test systems.

Cross-Functional Global Collaboration

  • Collaborate closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Operations teams across multiple international locations.
  • Provide technical leadership during prototype builds, pilot production, and product launches.
  • Support supplier qualification and manufacturing transfer activities globally.
  • Travel internationally to support implementation, validation, and launch activities.

Qualifications & Experience

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Test Engineering, Product Validation, NPI, or related technical environments.
  • Experience developing product verification and validation plans.
  • Strong experience designing or implementing automated test systems and test fixtures.
  • Proven experience supporting product development and production launch activities.
  • Strong understanding of Design for Testability (DFT) principles.
  • Experience with root cause analysis and structured problem-solving methodologies.
  • Fluent English communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally.

Preferred

  • Experience in power electronics, instrumentation, industrial equipment, or electronics manufacturing.
  • Experience with National Instruments, LabVIEW, Python, TestStand, or similar test platforms.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing test systems and automated data collection.
  • Lean Six Sigma certification is advantageous.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Leading test engineering activities for new product introductions.
  • Designing production test systems, fixtures, and automated test solutions.
  • Supporting pilot builds and global product launches.
  • Driving Design for Testability (DFT), DFMEA, and PFMEA activities.
  • Collaborating with international engineering and operations teams.
  • Supporting manufacturing transfer and industrialization activities globally.

What We're Looking For

  • Strong NPI and product validation experience.
  • Excellent test strategy and test development capability.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience implementing automated test systems.
  • Structured and data-driven problem solver.
  • Comfortable working across cultures and international teams.
  • Passion for product quality, technology, and continuous improvement.

Why Join Us?

  • Work on global new product introductions.
  • Influence product quality from the earliest design stages.
  • International collaboration and travel opportunities.
  • Exposure to advanced testing technologies and automation.
  • Career growth within a global operations and engineering organization.
