What is the difference between Npi Test Engineer vs Product Test Engineer?

AspectNpi Test EngineerProduct Test Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or related field, certifications like ISTQB are commonSimilar credentials, often with industry-specific certifications
Work EnvironmentWorks in R&D and manufacturing settings during new product developmentWorks in production or quality assurance to ensure ongoing product quality
Industry UsageUsed mainly during new product introduction phasesUsed throughout product lifecycle for ongoing testing and quality control
Comparison FocusFocuses on testing new products before mass productionFocuses on testing existing products for quality assurance

The Npi Test Engineer primarily focuses on testing new products during their development and introduction phase, ensuring they meet specifications before mass production. In contrast, the Product Test Engineer tests existing products to maintain quality standards throughout their lifecycle. Both roles require similar skills and certifications but differ mainly in their focus and timing within the product development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an NPI Test Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an NPI Test Engineer, you need a solid background in electronics or engineering, strong problem-solving abilities, and experience with new product introduction processes. Familiarity with test automation tools, programming languages (such as Python or LabVIEW), and quality standards like ISO 9001 is typically required. Excellent communication, teamwork, and project management skills help you collaborate across engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams. These skills ensure efficient test development, smooth product launches, and high-quality outcomes in fast-paced manufacturing environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by NPI Test Engineers during the product development cycle?

NPI (New Product Introduction) Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as rapidly adapting test procedures for evolving prototypes, balancing tight deadlines with thorough validation, and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams like design, manufacturing, and quality assurance. Managing changing specifications and troubleshooting unforeseen issues with new hardware or software are common aspects of the role. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential, as test engineers play a key part in ensuring products meet both performance and manufacturability goals before mass production.

What is an NPI Test Engineer?

An NPI (New Product Introduction) Test Engineer is a professional responsible for developing and validating test processes and equipment for new products before they go into mass production. They work closely with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure that products meet performance and reliability standards. Their role involves creating test plans, troubleshooting issues, and optimizing testing procedures to support a smooth product launch. NPI Test Engineers help bridge the gap between product development and manufacturing, ensuring that new products can be produced efficiently and meet quality expectations.

Job description

AWS Manufacturing & Repair operations is focused on automated assembly solutions where innovative solutions are needed to accelerate overall manufacturing time for AI/ML platforms. We work backwards from customers to increase critical capacity for AWS services by improving yield and reliability while reducing cycle time. This new highly cross-functional initiative brings together critical expertise from a wide-range of Amazon teams dedicated to meeting and exceeding customer expectations through innovative validation processes and Amazon operational excellence.
We are seeking a Manufacturing Test Engineer to work in conjunction with internal partner Hardware Engineering and NPI Test teams to translate testing methodology and scripts into our operational manufacturing environment

This is a rare opportunity to shape manufacturing test strategy from the ground up, directly impacting the speed and quality at which AI infrastructure reaches customers.
We're looking for a Manufacturing Test Engineer who thrives at the intersection of hardware, software, and production operations. You'll own the end-to-end manufacturing test ecosystem - from early prototype builds through high-volume production and sustaining - across server (L10) and rack-level (L11/L12) integration. This role requires someone who doesn't just find problems but owns the fix, builds self-remedy capabilities, and relentlessly drives uptime and automation.
AWS Manufacturing & Repair is a part of the broader AWS Infrastructure Services team which owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure

We are the teams who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain - and we're looking for talented people who want to help.

You'll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You'll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you'll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Come join our team and be a part of history as we deliver results for the largest cloud services company on Earth

This role directly supports physical manufacturing environments across multiple locations with travel expected 25% of the time.
Key job responsibilities
Own and Support the Test Ecosystem: Architect, develop, and maintain the manufacturing test infrastructure for AI server hardware products, spanning board-level validation through full rack integration and networking.
Build and Scale Test Software: Design and maintain production test software and automation frameworks using Python, Bash, and related tooling, including test sequencing, equipment control, data collection, and reporting pipelines.
Drive Automation & Self-Remedy: Develop automated test processes and self-healing capabilities that reduce manual intervention, increase throughput, and improve first-pass yield across the production line.
Define Test Strategy: Establish modular test strategies, define pass/fail limits, and implement statistical process controls (GR&R, Cp/Cpk, correlation analysis) to ensure product quality at scale.
Analyze Production Data: Compile and analyze test data using both automated reporting systems and exploratory analysis techniques to identify trends, root-cause failures, and drive corrective actions
Own Uptime & Yield: Monitor functional test yield across shifts, lead triage efforts for test-station failures, and drive weekly production quality reviews with cross-functional partners.
Collaborate Across Teams: Work closely with hardware design, firmware, process engineering, quality, and operations teams to ensure test requirements are aligned and products are designed for efficient, high-quality manufacturing.
Guide Fixture & Infrastructure Design: Partner on test fixture design and procurement, ensuring alignment to cost, scalability, and schedule requirements; engage in RFQ processes for optimal end-to-end test solutions.
Support New Product Introduction (NPI): Support partner teams in the development of test solutions for new product builds, from concept prototypes through production ramp, ensuring readiness at each phase gate.
Sustain & Improve: Provide ongoing support for deployed test systems, implement configuration changes for new product variants, and maintain comprehensive documentation of test procedures, specifications, and infrastructure.
Provide Feedback Upstream: Deliver actionable design-for-test (DFT) feedback to hardware and firmware development teams to improve testability and manufacturing efficiency for future platforms.
