For smaller companies, you may also process payroll and verify transactions for accounts payable and accounts receivable. As an entry-level bookkeeper, you usually work under the supervision of a senior bookkeeper or accountant while you learn the skills necessary to operate independently. Bookkeepers work with spreadsheets and financial software such as Microsoft Excel and Intuit Quickbooks.
