Industry UsageMajor league, professional sportsAmateur, semi-pro, or professional levels

The main difference is that an NHL refers to a professional ice hockey league, while a hockey player can be anyone who plays hockey at any level. NHL players are professionals with specific contracts and high-level training, whereas hockey players may be amateurs or semi-pros. Understanding this distinction helps in job searches and career planning within the sport industry.

What are NHL players?

NHL players are professional ice hockey athletes who compete in the National Hockey League, the premier ice hockey league in North America. The NHL consists of teams from both the United States and Canada, and its players are among the best in the world. NHL players are known for their skill, speed, and physicality on the ice, and they often have years of experience in junior, collegiate, or international leagues before joining the NHL. They are responsible for representing their teams in regular season and playoff games, aiming to win the coveted Stanley Cup each season.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an NHL player, and why are they important?

To thrive as an NHL player, you need elite skating ability, advanced hockey skills, physical fitness, and years of competitive playing experience, often supported by junior or collegiate hockey backgrounds. Mastery of video analysis tools, strength and conditioning programs, and familiarity with team playbooks are essential. Exceptional teamwork, mental toughness, and strong communication help players excel both individually and within the team dynamic. These skills and qualities are crucial to meeting the intense physical and mental demands of professional hockey, maximizing performance, and contributing to team success.

What are some common challenges new NHL players face when transitioning to professional hockey?

New NHL players often encounter challenges such as adapting to the faster pace and increased physicality compared to junior or collegiate leagues. Balancing travel, media obligations, and rigorous training schedules can also be demanding. Additionally, integrating into the team's established systems and building chemistry with new teammates requires strong communication and adaptability. Support from coaches, veteran players, and team staff helps rookies navigate these transitions and develop their professional careers.

We're looking for new team members to join FanDuel Sports Network, the nation's largest provider of live local sports.

As a local sports media platform, we're proud to be the local media partner for 29 MLB, NHL, and NBA teams, producing and delivering over 3,000 live games and events every year. Whether it's the heat of a playoff push or the excitement of Opening Day, we're all about delivering the moments that matter to hometown fans.

We're part of Main Street Sports Group, serving fans in regions across our 15 owned and operated networks. We combine powerful partnerships, cutting-edge streaming technology, and smart distribution to make sure fans can watch their teams how they want, whether that's through a direct-to-consumer streaming platform or major cable providers.

The Position:

The Inventory Analyst, Ad Sales plays a critical role in maximizing the value of FanDuel Sports Network's commercial inventory across live broadcasts and shoulder programming. Focused primarily on MLB, NBA, and NHL properties, this role ensures our ad inventory is forecasted accurately, sold efficiently, monetized strategically across both linear and digital platforms.

We have 2 positions available. 1 located in St. Louis, MO and the other can be located in Atlanta, GA or NYC.

The Game Plan:
(What you will do)

  • Track, analyze, and forecast advertising inventory across live sports broadcasts (MLB, NBA, NHL) and original programming across all RSNs.
  • Partner with Sales, Planning, and Programming teams to align inventory availability with content schedules and sales strategy.
  • Monitor sell-through rates, preemptions, and under/over-sold areas to support revenue maximization.
  • Identify revenue opportunities in shoulder programming, pre/post-game shows, and special events.
  • Support pricing strategies by providing data-driven insights on inventory demand, ratings performance, and market trends.
  • Maintain inventory management systems and dashboards (e.g., WideOrbit, Excel, Power BI) to ensure real-time accuracy.
  • Collaborate with the linear and digital ad ops teams to coordinate inventory across cable and streaming platforms.
  • Provide regular reporting and post-campaign analysis to internal stakeholders and leadership.
  • Stay informed on programming changes, league schedules, and playoff scenarios that may impact inventory.

The Stats:
(What to bring)

  • Proficiency in ad sales systems such as WideOrbit, Operative One, or similar tools.
  • Strong analytical and Excel skills (pivot tables, x-lookups, modeling).
  • Familiarity with live sports schedules, seasonality, and local broadcast considerations.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment with live event pressure.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • A passion for local sports and fan-first media experiences.
  • Knowledge of ratings systems (e.g., Nielsen) and performance measurement tools.

Player Benefits:

  • Healthcare Benefits - Start 1st day of employment.
  • Wellness Program Incentive
  • 401K - Match up to 4%.
  • Paid Time Off (Vacation, Personal)
  • Company Holidays
  • Short-Term & Long-Term Disability Benefits
  • Employee Discounts

The Company is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The annual base compensation range for this role is $28 - $38/hour. Final compensation for this role will be determined by various factors such as a candidate's relevant work experience, skills, certifications, and geographic location.
