A neurodivergent internship is a work experience program specifically designed to support individuals who identify as neurodivergent, such as those with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, or other neurological differences. These internships often offer tailored support, accommodations, and an inclusive environment to help neurodivergent interns succeed. Employers may provide flexible work arrangements, mentorship, and training for staff to foster understanding and acceptance. The goal is to create opportunities for neurodivergent individuals to gain valuable professional experience while embracing their unique strengths.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Neurodivergent Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Neurodivergent Intern, you typically need a willingness to learn, adaptability, and an understanding of your own strengths and support needs, often demonstrated through academic coursework or relevant experience. Familiarity with common office software, communication platforms, and assistive technologies may be beneficial depending on the industry. How do Neurodivergent Internship programs typically provide support and accommodations for interns during their experience?

Neurodivergent Internship programs are designed to create an inclusive environment by offering tailored support and accommodations based on individual needs. Interns are usually encouraged to discuss their preferred working styles and any accommodations they may need with their supervisors or HR representatives. Description
Winter Program: February 1- April 23, 2007
Launch your professional future in Washington, D.C. through a supportive, structured internship experience designed for motivated neurodivergent young people.
The BroadFutures DC Internship Program combines paid internships with individualized coaching, professional training, and ongoing mentorship to help interns build confidence, workplace skills, and independence. Interns participate in a cohort-based experience that includes pre-program training, weekly professional development, and personalized support throughout the internship.
Our internships are intentionally matched based on each intern's strengths, interests, and goals, with opportunities available across a wide range of sectors, including nonprofit organizations, hospitality, marketing and communications, policy, administration, technology, and more. All accepted participants are guaranteed an internship placement.
The program is designed for neurodivergent young adults ages 18-26 who are college-capable, motivated to grow professionally, and ready to gain meaningful real-world experience in a supportive environment. Internships take place in person throughout the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
Program Structure: The first week is comprehensive professional training. For the remainder of the program, participants are at their internship site Monday-Thursday (20 hours total) and in professional training with the intern cohort every Friday.
Comprehensive support: Interns and employers receive both group and one-on-one support throughout the program.
Equal pay: Stipends equal to at least D.C. minimum wage.
