Job description

As MISO's Network Engineer I, you will play a critical role in designing, enhancing, and supporting a complex enterprise network environment with a strong focus on Cisco routing, Palo Alto firewalls, and secure architectural solutions. In this hands-on, high-impact position, you will work on technical troubleshooting efforts, advise analysts, and partner with vendors to drive forward-looking network initiatives. The role centers on solution design, reviewing diagrams, proposing architectures, and implementing routing, security, and voice-related improvements across the environment. You will thrive here if you bring technical curiosity, the ability to ask probing questions, and a calm, steady presence under pressure. This position offers the opportunity to influence long-term strategy while delivering day-one impact through expert network engineering and operational excellence.
What You'll Do as our Network Engineer I:
  • Configure, support, and optimize Cisco routing, Palo Alto firewalls, F5 technologies, Cisco ISE, DUO MFA, and network security protocols.
  • Contribute to continuous improvements in security posture, operational stability, and architectural standards.
  • Engage with vendors to evaluate new technologies, gather quotes, and propose solution options.
  • Lead troubleshooting during outages, serving as a technical escalation point and participating in bridge calls.
  • Provide mentorship to analysts and advise on design approaches, best practices, and solution strategies.
  • Support network monitoring, analysis, and reporting using tools such as Splunk, SolarWinds, and Tufin.
  • Participate in automation and Infrastructure-as-Code initiatives, supporting AI-driven or automated solutions where possible.
  • Conduct architecture reviews, evaluate diagrams, and recommend improvements across the overall network environment.
  • Assist with governance, compliance documentation, policy drafting, and technical writing.
  • Participate in 24x7 on-call rotation.

What You'll Bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or 10+ years relevant work experience equivalency, required.
  • Minimum of eight years' experience working in complex communication environments.
  • Deep expertise in Cisco routing and enterprise network communication principles.
  • Strong knowledge of Palo Alto firewall rule sets, components, and security best practices.
  • Experience with Cisco ISE, MFA technologies, and modern network security protocols.
  • Proficiency with F5, private networking, MPLS/VPN, and wired infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with SolarWinds, Splunk, and Tufin.
  • Ability to design, build, and troubleshoot complex network architectures.
  • Technical writing and documentation capabilities.

Preferred Skills and Experiences:
  • CCNA, CCNP, CCIE, or PCNSA (CCNP strongly preferred).
  • Experience with network automation, scripting, or Infrastructure-as-Code.
  • Background supporting Cisco collaboration technologies.
  • Python or REST-based automation exposure.

Appropriate level will be determined based upon experience and knowledge.
