An NCAA Strength Conditioning Intern assists strength and conditioning coaches in developing and implementing training programs for student-athletes. Responsibilities typically include supervising workouts, demonstrating exercises, assisting with injury prevention strategies, and maintaining weight room equipment. Interns gain hands-on experience in athletic performance training while learning from experienced professionals. This role helps build foundational skills for a career in strength and conditioning coaching.
As an NCAA Strength Conditioning Intern, your day usually starts early with preparing weight rooms and equipment for team training sessions, followed by assisting coaches in running warm-ups, supervising athletes, and ensuring proper exercise technique. You may help track athlete progress, clean and organize training spaces, and occasionally assist with administrative tasks like data input or scheduling. Interns often collaborate closely with strength coaches, athletic trainers, and sport coaches, gaining firsthand experience in a team-based environment. This hands-on exposure not only builds practical skills but also provides valuable networking opportunities for future roles in collegiate or professional athletics.
To thrive as an NCAA Strength Conditioning Intern, you need a solid understanding of exercise science, anatomy, and basic programming principles, often gained through pursuit of a related degree. Familiarity with weight room equipment, athletic performance monitoring systems, and certifications like CPR/AED or a CSCS-in-progress are typically desired. Strong communication, attention to detail, and the ability to motivate athletes are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills help ensure athlete safety, effective training, and smooth collaboration with coaches, setting the foundation for a successful career in sports performance.
