Assistant Director - Strength & Conditioning

Job Description:
Job Summary
The Assistant Director of Strength & Conditioning is responsible for instructing on specific protocol for sports program design related to individual concerns, seasonal needs related to peaking for particular events and time considerations for the sport programs. Will also work with other strength & conditioning staff to ensure the program instruction and design methodologies for sports are consistent across the area. Implement strength, agility, speed, flexibility and conditioning programs with the student-athletes. This includes technique instruction, demonstration of techniques and skills, motivation, development of discipline, testing and evaluation of athlete's performance related to area of strength & conditioning.
What You'll Be Doing:
  • Will be responsible for technique instruction, demonstration of techniques and skills, motivation, development of discipline, testing and evaluation of athlete's performance related to area of sports performance.
  • Develop an annual training plan which involves synthesizing the various training components (i.e. strength, power, speed) during the in-season, off-season and pre-season.
  • On-floor instruction and supervision of the weight training facility for safety, motivation, technique and program adjustments relative to all student-athletes who utilize the facility.
  • The Assistant Director of Strength & Conditioning will work with other strength & conditioning staff to ensure the program design methodologies for sports are consistent across the area, and to ensure that the specific team programs are in place.
  • Maintenance and upkeep of student-athletes performance data necessary to develop future program considerations.
  • Oversee maintenance & upkeep of facilities and equipment.
  • Exercise functional supervision for undergraduate student employees.
  • Duties include assigning, instructing and reviewing work of others.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

What We're Looking For:
Education and Experience:
  • BA/BS
  • MS/MA preferred in area that provides a knowledge base in exercise physiology and athletic performance
  • Two (2) years of strength & conditioning experience
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (C.S.C.S.) through the National Strength & Conditioning Association required or Strength and Conditioning Coach Certification (SCCC) through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCA)
  • Experience in collegiate setting highly desired

Skills needed:
  • Must demonstrate a high energy level at all times.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both coaches and athletes.
  • Must stay abreast of sports program and design methodologies for their respective sport within Athletics.
  • Must on their own initiative, research the industry to stay on the cutting edge of skills and technology.
  • Must be able to work with all coaches and athletes interchangeably to ensure consistency across the strength & conditioning area.
  • Knowledge of sport-specific fundamentals, techniques, and safety rules & regulations.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, communicate, and adhere to University, Big Ten Conference, and NCAA policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Excellent communication (oral & written), planning, organizational, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to influence and build positive relationships among diverse individuals including student-athletes, parents, coaches, staff, and students.
  • Personal computer and related software skills, e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, data query, Internet, etc., necessary.
  • Knowledge of the physiological adaptations of the human body to active exercise; of teaching the safe and correct techniques in execution of weight training, speed development and conditioning.
  • Knowledge in the use of weight training equipment (isotonic, isokinetic, isometric, variable resistant) is needed.
  • Ability to motivate and evaluate specific individual psychic and physical needs respectively.
