About the Department
The University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics competes at the highest level of intercollegiate athletics with the vision to reach Next Level Success for all 18 varsity teams and more than 450 student-athletes. The Bearcats have a proud athletics history, winning eight national championships and 118 conference titles. The Cincinnati men's basketball team is among the 15 winningest programs all-time, while the football team became the first non-Power Five program to compete in the College Football Playoff in 2021. Olympic gold medalist volleyball player Jordan Thompson, NBA Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson and Major League Baseball legend Sandy Koufax are among the several luminaries who have competed as Bearcats.

Job Overview
The University of Cincinnati, Department of Athletics is seeking applicants for an Assistant Sports Information Officer. The position will serve as primary public relations contact for assigned sport programs, directing all external communications and media relations efforts. This includes acting as the program spokesperson, managing relationships with media and television partners, and developing proactive storytelling and branding strategies. The successful candidate will be appointed at the Assistant Director (Assistant Sports Information Officer) level.
Essential Functions
  • Contribute, plan and execute public relations initiatives for assigned unit or program.
  • Create editorial content for online and social media platforms including but not limited to media guides, news releases, feature stories and graphics.
  • Proactively pursue new, creative and innovative methods for enhancing the unit or programs' brand and media presence, including continued awareness of trends in visual communications, emerging media, earned media, social media and digital technologies.
  • Contact writers, broadcasters, editors to place stories.
  • May represent the unit or program in designated activities.
  • May administer and monitor expenditures.
  • May maintain current and historical information on unit or program.
  • May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).
  • Perform related duties based on departmental need. This job description can be changed at any time.

Required Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in English, Mass Communications or related field
  • Five (5) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Required Experience
  • One (1) year of experience in public relations or publications or related field.

Additional Qualifications Considered
  • Experience mentoring and leading student interns.
  • Self-motivated and proactive and ready to work as part of a small team.
  • The ability to work under tight deadlines and pressure.
  • Good interpersonal, organizational and planning skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • A willingness to work outside normal working hours when necessary and travel with teams.
