What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a NASA position?

To thrive at NASA, professionals generally need a solid background in STEM fields such as engineering, physics, computer science, or related disciplines, typically supported by advanced degrees. Familiarity with specialized software (like MATLAB, CAD, or programming languages), government security clearances, and certifications such as PMP or IT credentials are often required depending on the specific role. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help individuals succeed in NASA's collaborative, high-stakes environment. These competencies are vital for tackling complex projects, ensuring mission success, and advancing innovation in space exploration and research.

What is the typical work environment and team structure like for NASA employees?

NASA employees typically work in highly collaborative and multidisciplinary teams that may include scientists, engineers, project managers, and support staff. The work environment is often a blend of laboratory settings, offices, and, for some roles, clean rooms or mission control centers. Employees routinely engage in project-based tasks, contribute to innovative research, and participate in joint problem-solving with colleagues from diverse specialties. The team structure encourages open communication, mentorship, and ongoing learning, which supports both individual and mission-wide growth. This collaborative approach ensures that complex objectives, such as space missions or technological advancements, are accomplished efficiently and safely.

What is a NASA?

A NASA job refers to a position working for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the U.S. agency responsible for space exploration, scientific discovery, and aeronautics research. NASA offers roles in engineering, science, technology, administration, and mission operations. Employees work on projects related to space missions, satellite development, climate research, and more. Positions can be based at NASA centers across the U.S., and opportunities exist for both civilian and contractor positions.

What jobs can you get in NASA?

NASA offers a wide range of jobs including aerospace engineers, scientists, technicians, computer scientists, and administrative staff. These roles often require specialized skills, degrees in relevant fields, and security clearances, with opportunities in research, mission operations, and engineering environments.

U.S. Citizenship Required

This position supports U.S. Department of Defense contracts that legally require all personnel to be U.S. citizens. Candidates who are not U.S. citizens will not be considered.

Systems Lead

Location: NSWC-Crane, IN*
Position Type: Full-Time
Travel Requirements: Up to 10%

Position Summary

Created Solutions is seeking a Systems Lead to provide technical leadership across complex, multidisciplinary defense and aerospace programs. In this role, you will be responsible for guiding system architecture, requirements development, integration, and verification efforts to ensure mission success from concept through deployment.

The Systems Lead serves as the connective tissue between engineering disciplines-mechanical, electrical, software, and manufacturing-ensuring that system-level decisions are technically sound, traceable, and executable. The ideal candidate brings strong systems thinking, disciplined engineering judgment, and the ability to lead teams through ambiguity with clarity and confidence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead system architecture development, requirements definition, and technical trade studies for defense and aerospace systems.
  • Serve as the technical authority ensuring alignment between customer requirements and engineering execution.
  • Coordinate and guide cross-functional engineering teams to achieve cohesive, integrated system solutions.
  • Manage system interfaces, requirements traceability, and configuration control across the product lifecycle.
  • Oversee system integration, verification, and validation (IV&V) activities.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate technical risks at the system level.
  • Support program execution by balancing technical performance, cost, and schedule constraints.
  • Provide systems engineering expertise in proposal development, technical reviews, and customer engagements.
  • Mentor engineers and help establish best practices for systems engineering rigor and discipline.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain at least Collateral Secret security clearance.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Systems, Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, or related field required; Master's preferred).
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in systems engineering or technical leadership roles.
  • Demonstrated experience leading system architecture, requirements development, and integration efforts.
  • Strong understanding of the full system lifecycle-from concept and requirements through verification and sustainment.
  • Familiarity with systems engineering tools and methodologies (requirements management, trade studies, interface control, risk management).
  • Experience working across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to brief technical content to customers and leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting DoD or aerospace programs, including work with agencies such as DARPA, NASA, Army, Navy, Air Force, MDA, FFRDC's, UARC's, and National Labs.
  • Experience with flight systems, hypersonics, avionics, or complex weapon or space systems.
  • Familiarity with MBSE (Model-Based Systems Engineering) tools and approaches (e.g., SysML).
  • Experience leading technical efforts on government proposals or capture teams.
  • Prior experience serving as a technical lead, chief engineer, or systems integration lead.
