What is Nano Dimension?

Nano Dimension is a technology company specializing in the development and manufacturing of advanced 3D printing systems for electronics, including printed circuit boards (PCBs) and electronic devices. The company’s proprietary additive manufacturing technology allows for rapid prototyping and production of complex electronic components. Nano Dimension's solutions are used in industries such as aerospace, defense, automotive, and medical devices, enabling faster innovation and reduced development costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Nano Dimension engineer?

To thrive as a Nano Dimension Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, 3D printing technologies, and materials science, typically with a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, additive manufacturing systems, and PCB design tools is essential, along with experience in rapid prototyping. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills in this role. These capabilities are important to drive innovation in advanced electronics manufacturing and ensure high-quality, reliable product development.

What are some common challenges faced by engineers working at Nano Dimension, and how can applicants prepare for them?

Engineers at Nano Dimension often work on cutting-edge additive manufacturing technologies for electronics, which means they frequently encounter complex, interdisciplinary problems that require knowledge of materials science, electronics, and software. A common challenge is keeping up with the rapid pace of technological advancements and integrating new processes into existing workflows. Applicants can prepare by staying current with industry trends, being proactive about learning new tools, and developing strong collaboration skills, as projects often involve close teamwork with R&D, production, and software development teams.

What is the difference between Nano Dimension vs PCB Designer?

AspectNano DimensionPCB Designer
Required CredentialsTypically requires engineering degree, CAD software proficiencyRequires engineering or technical degree, CAD software skills
Work EnvironmentElectronics manufacturing, R&D labsElectronics design firms, manufacturing companies
Industry UsageAdvanced electronics, 3D printing of PCBsDesigning printed circuit boards for various electronics

Nano Dimension professionals focus on 3D printing and manufacturing of complex electronics, often working with advanced materials. PCB Designers primarily create detailed layouts for printed circuit boards used in electronic devices. While both roles require CAD skills and engineering knowledge, Nano Dimension roles are more involved in manufacturing processes, whereas PCB Designers focus on design and layout. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus within the electronics industry.

Job description

This position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Professional Research Experience Program (PREP). NIST recognizes that its research staff may want to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest and, therefore, requires those institutions to be recipients of a PREP award. The PREP program involves staff from a wide range of backgrounds conducting scientific research across various fields. Individuals in this position will perform technical work supporting the collaboration's scientific research.
Research Title: Empowering Combined and Hybrid Metrology
The work will entail: Developing novel AI and ML methods to improve critical dimension metrology techniques and use the improved models and hybrid metrology approaches to determine how to combine different measurements in an optimal way to reduce the overall parametric uncertainties for industrially relevant semi-conductor architectures.
U.S. Citizen Preferred
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
  • Develop/improve AI/ML physics-based methods for CD estimation from non-imaging data .
  • Evaluate accuracy and robustness of the developed methods and models.
  • Presenting results at internal meetings, and occasional meetings with external stakeholders.
  • Ensuring that results, protocols, software, and documentation have been archived or otherwise transmitted to the larger organization.

Qualifications
  • A PhD in mathematics, physics, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Familiarity with ML/AI methods and the theory of inverse problems.
  • Familiarity with semiconductor metrology.
  • Ability to work with a variety of measurement data relevant in the semiconductor industry.
  • Familiarity with multiple scripting languages.
  • Ability to develop prototypes of tools needed to analyze data.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Privacy Act StatementAuthority: 15 U.S.C. § 278g-1(e)(1) and (e)(3) and 15 U.S.C. § 272(b) and (c)
Purpose: The National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) hosts the Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) which is designed to provide valuable laboratory experience and financial assistance to undergraduates, post-bachelor's degree holders, graduate students, master's degree holders, postdocs, and faculty.
PREP is a 5-year cooperative agreement between NIST laboratories and participating PREP Universities to establish a collaborative research relationship between NIST and U.S. institutions of higher education in the following disciplines including (but may not be limited to) biochemistry, biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, engineering, electronics, materials science, mathematics, nanoscale science, neutron science, physical science, physics, and statistics. This collection of information is needed to facilitate the administrative functions of the PREP Program.
Routine Uses: NIST will use the information collected to perform the requisite reviews of the applications to determine eligibility, and to meet programmatic requirements. Disclosure of this information is also subject to all the published routine uses as identified in the Privacy Act System of Records Notices: NIST-1: NIST Associates.
