What is a named account manager?

A Named Account Manager is a sales professional responsible for managing and growing relationships with specific, high-value clients—referred to as 'named accounts.' Unlike general account managers who may handle a broad range of clients, Named Account Managers focus on a designated portfolio of important customers, often in enterprise or strategic segments. Their responsibilities typically include understanding client needs, providing tailored solutions, and ensuring customer satisfaction to drive long-term business growth. They work closely with other teams to deliver value and maintain a strong partnership with each named account.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a named account manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Named Account Manager, you need a deep understanding of sales strategies, account management, and industry knowledge, often supported by a bachelor's degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM platforms like Salesforce, sales analytics tools, and sometimes relevant sales certifications are typically required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to build long-term client relationships distinguish top performers. These skills are crucial for effectively managing high-value accounts, achieving revenue targets, and fostering client loyalty in a competitive market.

What other jobs can a Named Account Manager do?

A Named Account Manager can transition into roles such as Business Development Manager, Sales Director, Customer Success Manager, or Account Executive, leveraging skills in client relationship management, sales strategy, and negotiation. These roles often require strong communication, industry knowledge, and familiarity with CRM tools like Salesforce.

What is the difference between Named Account Manager vs Customer Success Manager?

AspectNamed Account ManagerCustomer Success Manager
Primary FocusManaging specific high-value client accounts to maximize revenueEnsuring client satisfaction and retention across all accounts
Work EnvironmentSales-driven, client-facing, often in B2B industriesClient support, relationship management, cross-functional collaboration
Required CredentialsSales experience, industry knowledge, communication skillsCustomer service skills, industry knowledge, communication skills

While both roles involve client interaction, the Named Account Manager primarily focuses on sales and revenue growth within specific accounts, whereas the Customer Success Manager emphasizes client satisfaction and retention. Both roles require strong communication skills and industry knowledge, but their core objectives differ—one aims to upsell and expand accounts, the other to ensure ongoing client success.

How does a named account manager typically collaborate with internal teams to meet client needs?

As a Named Account Manager, you’ll often work closely with cross-functional teams such as sales engineering, customer support, and product specialists. Your role involves acting as the primary point of contact for designated clients, ensuring their requirements are communicated clearly within your organization. Regular coordination meetings and strategy sessions help align internal resources to deliver tailored solutions, resolve issues quickly, and maximize client satisfaction. Building strong internal relationships is crucial for delivering on client expectations and achieving your sales targets.

How much does a Named Account Manager get paid?

A Named Account Manager typically earns between $70,000 and $120,000 annually, with total compensation often including commissions and bonuses based on sales performance. Salaries can vary depending on industry, experience, and geographic location, with higher pay generally associated with larger accounts and more complex sales environments.

Job description

We Are:

Accenture's Mid-Market Activation team is the strategic growth engine for mid-market expansion and direct business. We design and execute go-to-market strategies that enable our sales teams, engage mid-market clients, and drive revenue across a diverse portfolio of named accounts. We operate at the intersection of strategy, sales, and execution - and we are looking for exceptional business development leaders to help us identify, pursue, and close net new Accenture opportunities in the mid-market through expansion and direct motions.

You Are:

A high-impact Business Development Account Executive with a proven track record of originating and closing net new business in mid-market environments. You combine strategic vision with relentless execution, and you are energized by the challenge of building new client relationships and expanding Accenture's footprint across subsidiary and mid-market segments. You bring strong commercial instincts, a hunter mentality, and the gravitas to engage senior stakeholders with credibility and conviction.

The Work:

  • Originate and develop net new business opportunities for Accenture across mid-market client segments.
  • Build and maintain a robust pipeline of new logo and expansion opportunities, with a focus on accounts where Accenture has limited or no existing presence.
  • Design and execute targeted outreach strategies to engage new mid-market prospects and convert them into active opportunities.
  • Partner with Client Group Leads, Solution Architects, and GTM teams to develop compelling value propositions and proposals for net new pursuits.
  • Represent Accenture at industry events, forums, and client-facing engagements to build brand awareness and generate new business leads.
  • Maintain rigorous pipeline discipline: track, forecast, and report on net new opportunity progress to Mid-Market Activation leadership.
  • Develop deep understanding of mid-market client needs, competitive dynamics, and market trends to sharpen Accenture's business development approach.
  • Contribute to the evolution of Accenture's mid-market go-to-market strategy and business development playbook.

Travel may be required for this role. The amount of travel will vary from 25% to 50% depending on business need and client requirements.

Here's What You Need:

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in business development or new logo acquisition in a consulting, technology, or professional services environment.
  • Demonstrated track record of originating and closing significant net new business in mid-market or multi-subsidiary environments. ($500K+ ARR)
  • Proven track record of sourcing and closing $500K - $3M TCV deals in mid-market or multi-subsidiary environments, with a consistent history of meeting or exceeding annual quota targets at 100%+.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in a highly matrixed organization and mobilize internal resources to support net new pursuits.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent (minimum 12 years) work experience. (If Associate's Degree, must have minimum 6 years work experience)

Bonus Points If:

  • You have worked within a named account environment.
  • You have experience working inside a large organization where multiple teams are selling a variety of products and services to the same accounts.
  • You have built net new business development capabilities from scratch in a high-growth environment.
  • You have experience leveraging ecosystem and channel partners to generate and accelerate net new pipeline.

Professional Skills:

  • Strong external network and the ability to build new client relationships quickly and credibly.
  • Excellent executive communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage C-suite and senior stakeholders.
