Job description

The Department of Music is housed in the dynamic School of Arts and Design at High Point University. The department is searching for an Instructor of Music with specialization in Percussion, Composition, and Music Theory for the 2026-2027 academic year.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Master's degree in Percussion, Music Theory, Composition, or a related field
  • Experience teaching at the college/university level
  • Experience teaching Applied Percussion
  • Experience directing Percussion Ensemble
  • Be a good communicator, collaborator and team player who can thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced,extraordinaryenvironment

QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:

  • PhD or DMA in in Percussion, Music Theory, Composition, or a related field
  • Experience directing Wind Band and/or other instrumental ensembles
  • Experience teaching Applied Composition
  • Experience teaching Applied Drumset
  • Experience teaching Music Theory and Aural Skills
  • Expertise in music technology and music writing software

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach undergraduate studio percussion, drumset, and composition lessons to music majors, minors, and non-majors
  • Teach undergraduate music theory and aural skills courses
  • Direct the HPU Percussion Ensemble
  • Direct the "Fresh Picked" concert of student works each semester
  • Assistant direct the HPU Wind Ensemble
  • Play principal percussion/timpani in the HPU Community Orchestra
  • Maintain all percussion inventory and advise on necessary repairs and purchases
  • Maintain all music technology hardware/software inventory and advise on necessary repairs, purchases, and updates
  • Serve as assistant director of instrumental division
  • Participate in departmental and university service, with special focus on recruitment
  • Participate in innovative teaching and curriculum development and assessment
