Job description
The Adams School of Music and the Arts at Gordon College seeks a full-time, tenure-track Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (open rank) of Music Education who is able to teach a variety of music education and core music courses, and who has specialization in the general music or choral music area. Candidates must display a broad range of skills that will allow them to contribute across a variety of music offerings, in support of both the College's liberal arts curriculum and its well-respected and vibrant undergraduate and graduate music education program. The position begins August 2026.
The Adams School of Music and the Arts at Gordon College is an intentionally collaborative hub of all creative disciplines at the College, housing programs in Music, Art, Theatre Arts, and Communication Arts. As both a creative and Christian community, students at the Adams School experiencedeepened faith through the arts-creating, studying, and enjoying them together.The Adams School is comprised of 17 full-time faculty and over 30 adjunct and part-time faculty, of which 6 full time and 20 part time faculty teach in music. The Adams School offers four music degrees that are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music: Bachelor of Music in Music Education; Bachelor of Music in Performance; Bachelor of Arts in Music; Master of Music in Music Education; in addition to concentrations in Composition and Music in Worship; and minors in music and musical theatre. Additionally, hundreds of non-music majors participate in the music program through choral and instrumental ensembles and Core music classes. About one third of the total Gordon College population is involved in music and arts programming.
The music program at Gordon College is one that emphasizes whole musicianship, rigorous musical and academic training, and provides a nurturing environment in which our students can fully realize their God-given potential. The undergraduate Music Education program at Gordon has had a 100% teacher placement rate for all graduates seeking positions for more than 20 years. The graduate Music Education program offers master's, post-baccalaureate and continuing education options providing an exceptional foundation for new teachers and the tools for experienced teachers to thrive in K-12 choral, instrumental and general music classroom and ensemble settings. Our graduates serve in the public, charter and private schools as music teachers, attend reputable graduate schools and conservatories for performance and music education, perform in professional orchestras, teach in private music studios, and work in the fields of music administration, music therapy and church worship. The music program is housed in the state-of-the-art Phillips Music Center and the soon to be built Adams Center for Music.

Responsibilities for the successful candidate will include:
1. Teaching some of the following courses (to be determined based on qualifications, experience and program need):
โข Introduction to Music Education
โข Music Education I: K-5 Elementary Methods
โข Music Education II: 6-12 Secondary Methods
โข Choral Methods and Literature
โข Voice Class

โข Collegiate or community choral ensemble (conduct or accompany).
2. Recruiting and retention of music education majors. This might include interaction with prospective students, guest workshops at schools and festivals, serving as a clinician at conferences, and maintaining a significant professional profile.
3. Pre-practicum and practicum observation of music education students, and liaising with cooperating teachers.
4. Academic advising and vocational mentoring of music education students.
5. Curriculum planning and organization of specific music education community events (collegiate NAfME, Music Mania, Children's Choir concerts etc.) in collaboration with the Director of Music Education and Practicum and Pre-Practicum Coordinator.
6. Assist in upkeep of student files and coordination of processes for licensure.
7. Engaging in Adams School and Music program service. Including but not limited to faculty meetings, student convocations, adjudication of music auditions for prospective students, and committee service at discretion of Dean.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
โข Completed PhD or EdD in Music Education or equivalent
โข Successful experience teaching at the collegiate level
โข Experience teaching in the public school system
โข Knowledge of and ability to teach music learning theory specifically based on Edwin Gordon's research
โข Knowledge of and ability to teach Feierabend methods for music education
โข Significant interaction with and service to professional organizations such as NAfME, ACDA, or state MEAs
โข Demonstrated ability to build relationships with music educators in the field
โข A passion for teaching and mentoring of future and current music educators
โข A strong commitment to the Christian mission of the college
โข Strong collaborative and communication skills that cross disciplinary boundaries
