Overview

Wolf is seeking an experienced State and Local Tax (SALT) Leader to join our growing and well-established national firm. This role seeks a driven and entrepreneurial tax professional who thrives in a collaborative peer environment, is motivated to build something meaningful, and leads teams with confidence, influence, and vision. A successful candidate should possess a deep knowledge of state and local income and sales tax laws and regulations to help assess our clients' needs and recommend solutions that support their overall business objectives.As a SALT Practice Leader, your role will include the following responsibilities, which are focused on two core concepts: your technical expertise and your ability to deliver excellent quality client service.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, execute, and deliver innovative state and local jurisdictional tax planning, consulting and compliance expertise to clients
  • Market the Firm's state and local practice including development and publishing thought leadership
  • Work closely with business and personal services groups in reviewing multi-state returns and identifying client issues
  • Conduct tax research related to federal conformity, consolidated/unitary filing requirements, apportionment methodologies, domicile and other multi-state issues
  • Oversee and deliver voluntary disclosure engagements and representation before state tax authorities
  • Proven ability to work in a deadline-driven environment and handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ensure complete client satisfaction through open communication, managing expectations, meeting deadlines and proactively sharing tax saving strategies
  • Work closely with partners and staff on client management, professional development and business development activities
  • Manage, develop, train and mentor staff, including performance and engagement reviews
  • Audit Defense & Controversy Services: Lead and manage client representation before state and local tax authorities, including audits, appeals, voluntary disclosures, and administrative proceedings
  • Strategic SALT Leadership: Provide strategic leadership in the planning, execution, and delivery of complex state and local tax (SALT) planning, consulting, and compliance services across multiple industries and jurisdictions
  • Client Advisory & Risk Management: Serve as a trusted advisor to clients on sophisticated multistate tax matters, proactively identifying risks, opportunities, and innovative tax-saving strategies aligned with overall business objectives
  • Practice Leadership & Growth: Lead and grow the Firm's SALT practice through business development, client relationship management, expansion of service offerings, and identification of cross selling opportunities across other practice areas
  • Thought Leadership & Market Presence: Actively enhance the Firm's market presence by developing, publishing, and presenting thought leadership, including articles, webinars, client alerts, and conference presentations on emerging state and local tax trends and developments
  • Oversight of Regulatory Matters: Direct and oversee voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs), state tax audits, appeals, and other regulatory matters to ensure technically sound, defensible, and favorable outcomes for clients
Qualifications
  • J.D. or CPA certification required with 10+ years of tax experience, including at least 6 years of State and Local Income and Sales Tax experience
  • Strong technical expertise in SALT compliance and consulting, including oversight and technical review of returns, complex tax matters, agency correspondence, and tax research
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and problem solve complex multistate tax issues using both creative and analytical approaches
  • Proven ability to self direct and effectively organize, prioritize, and manage multiple complex engagements and client relationships under tight deadlines
  • Outstanding leadership, mentoring, and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to develop staff and foster long term client relationships
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to attract, expand, and develop profitable, sustainable client relationships
  • Sales and Use Tax Compliance & Consulting: Lead and oversee complex sales and use tax engagements, including return compliance, taxability analysis of products and services, exemption certificate management, and strategic audit defense advisory
  • Audit Defense & Controversy Services: Provide primary client representation and strategic guidance in state and local tax audits, appeals, and administrative proceedings; manage interactions with taxing authorities and mentor team members throughout the process
  • Nexus Studies & Voluntary Disclosure Agreements: Direct nexus studies to evaluate multistate filing obligations and advise clients on voluntary disclosure strategies to manage risk and mitigate historical exposure
  • Income and Franchise Tax Compliance & Consulting: Provide consultative guidance on nexus, apportionment, and allocation methodologies for multistate operations.
  • Pass Through Entity Tax Consulting: Advise clients on state pass through entity tax regimes, including elective entity level taxes and related compliance and planning considerations (e.g., SALT cap workaround strategies)
  • Transaction & Restructuring Consulting: Lead state and local tax due diligence, structuring, and planning for mergers, acquisitions, reorganizations, and other strategic business transactions
  • Business Development & Practice Growth: Actively participate in business development efforts, including client origination, cross selling services, preparing proposals and presentations, responding to RFPs, and contributing to thought leadership and market facing initiatives

The salary range for this position is $180,000 - $225,000.

Actual compensation within the range will be dependent upon the individual's skills, experience, qualifications and location, and applicable employment laws. In addition to base pay, you may be eligible to participate in our performance-based incentive compensation or sales commission plans. In addition, Wolf offers a wide range of benefits including spot awards, 401(k) savings, flexible work, and a generous total rewards and benefits package.
