Tax firms are organizations providing tax-related services to multiple clients, often employing multiple tax accountants. Tax accountants are professionals who prepare and file taxes, working either independently or within firms. While both roles require similar credentials, tax firms encompass the broader organization, whereas tax accountants are individual practitioners or employees within such firms.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in a tax firm, and how can they be managed?

Professionals in a tax firm often face challenges such as meeting tight deadlines during tax season, staying updated with frequently changing tax laws, and managing complex client portfolios. Effective time management, continuous professional development, and strong communication skills are essential to successfully navigate these challenges. Collaboration within the team and leveraging technology for workflow automation also help reduce stress and maintain accuracy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive at a tax firm, and why are they important?

To thrive at a tax firm, you need a solid understanding of tax laws, accounting principles, and financial analysis, typically supported by a degree in accounting or finance and CPA certification. Familiarity with tax preparation software, accounting systems like QuickBooks, and proficiency in Microsoft Excel are commonly required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong client communication skills will help you excel in client interactions and complex problem-solving. These skills ensure accurate tax filings, regulatory compliance, and the ability to provide high-quality advisory services to clients.

What is a tax firm?

A tax firm is a professional service organization that specializes in helping individuals, businesses, and organizations prepare and file tax returns, comply with tax laws, and plan for future tax obligations. These firms employ tax professionals, such as certified public accountants (CPAs), enrolled agents, and tax attorneys, to provide expert guidance on various tax matters. Services can range from basic tax preparation to complex tax planning, audit representation, and consulting on tax strategies. Tax firms can vary in size from small local practices to large international corporations. Working with a tax firm can help ensure accurate filings and minimize tax liabilities.

Job description

About Bright!Tax
Bright!Tax is a leading U.S. tax firm serving Americans living abroad. We help globally mobile people stay compliant with their U.S. tax obligations and make confident, informed decisions. Our team is fully remote and internationally distributed, united by one standard in everything we do: kindness, ease & expertise.

The Role
As a Client Relationship Manager on our Client Success team, you'll be the trusted advisor and relationship owner for a portfolio of clients. This is a senior, client-facing role for a CPA or Enrolled Agent with strong U.S. individual tax experience and the client-first instincts to build lasting relationships. Many of our clients are Americans living abroad - if you don't yet have expat tax depth, we'll train you; what we can't train is judgment, warmth, and a genuine command of individual tax.

What We're Looking For

Required

  • Active CPA or Enrolled Agent credential
  • 5+ years of U.S. individual tax experience
  • Direct client-facing experience in an advisory or senior client-service role
  • Exceptional communication - the ability to explain complex tax positions in warm, plain English
  • Strong organization, follow-through, and attention to detail
  • Comfort working independently in a remote, distributed team
  • Sound professional judgment and a genuinely client-focused approach
  • Eagerness to develop deep expertise in U.S. expat tax

Preferred

  • Experience with U.S. expat tax concepts (FEIE, FTC, FBAR, FATCA, treaty issues)
  • Experience with Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures
  • Experience advising globally mobile or cross-border clients
  • Background at an expat, international, or boutique tax firm
  • Familiarity with HubSpot or a comparable CRM
