Position Details
General Statement
Culinary Services Division (CSD), a division of Auxiliary Services, provides meals and specialty beverages for over 18,000 customers daily and is an integral part of campus life and the overall college experience. CSD proudly provides Montana State University students with not only a repertoire of various cuisines, cooking styles, and flavors, but a comfortable atmosphere to meet friends, study, and simply relax. The division is comprised of 2 residential dining halls, a commissary kitchen, several retail operations including 4 coffee shops, Chick-fil-A, the Union Market and Bobcat Grill, Brick Breeden Fieldhouse and Bobcat Stadium Concessions, Fork in the Road food truck, MSU Catering, Indulge In-House Bakery, and the Farm to Campus Program.
University Catering provides full catering services for campus and other contracted events. A sample of the 2000+ events worked per year include: VIP meals, banquets, buffets, served meals, coffee breaks, drop-offs, and boxed meals. The number of catered events can be upwards of 15-35 daily.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the management team, this working Floor Supervisor assists with leading and directing student and temporary staff in the preparation and execution of catering deliveries.
  • Organizes and executes events as contracted by clients while ensuring their expectations are being met
  • Organizes and assembles materials for in-house and out-of-house functions
    • Maintains organization of the catering staging area
    • Beverage preparation
  • Prepares, uses and explains load sheets and diagrams to student staff and occasionally other staff.
  • Oversees and supervises the daily duties of 25+ students and short term workers
    • Assists with training and evaluating as needed
    • Assists with basic policy development for backhall staff
  • Communicates needs such as staffing, equipment, repair updates, etc to the managers
  • Performs and assigns cleaning duties
  • Ensures compliance with sanitation guidelines and food handling and storage FDA codes, and as directed by MSU's Registered Sanitarian
  • Monitors catering item inventory and alerts managers to ordering needs as necessary
  • Monitors use and returns of equipment, small wares and uniforms
  • Orders paper ware, food and beverages for all back hall operations
  • Assists management in controlling food and labor costs
  • Actively contributes to the team by performing other duties as needed in support of the department's mission.

The Culinary Services Department lacks the necessary funding to provide sponsorship at this time.
Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Progressive experience working in the food service or hospitality industries or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  2. Experience directing, leading, and/or training staff.
  3. Extensive experience providing excellent front line customer service to a variety of individuals.

Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  1. Experience executing multiple catering events and food deliveries.

  • Must have the ability to understand and communicate in English with adequate proficiency to follow directions from supervisor, read and understand safety guidelines and directions to prevent accidents or injuries from occurring, and communicate effectively with customers (staff, visitors, students) by listening and speaking clearly to them.

  • Frequently moving all sorts of shapes and sizes of food service delivery and presentation items weighing up to 30lbs; occasionally moving containers weighing up to 50lbs.
  • Gripping handles on small kitchen utensils and other equipment.
  • Performing repetitive motions related to job duties.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals on a daily basis.
  • Occasionally work outside and in inclement weather.
