Participates in a supervised SkillBridge internship program; receives training in and performs a variety of non-hazardous field and routine administrative work in support of, or auxiliary to, police functions in preparation for a career in law enforcement; and performs other related duties as required.
Position is considered an authorized position under the DoD SkillBridge program. Interns will be paid by their respective Military Branch of Service. No compensation will be provided by the Honolulu Police Department (HPD). All interns are expected to participate in an authorized SkillBridge curriculum. Intern will receive familiarization in principles, practices, procedures and techniques of police work. Interns will participate in all areas of the provided curriculum and may work irregular hours, holidays, and weekend work.
After completion of the internship's authorized program timeline, and successful completion of all areas of the Metropolitan Police Recruit (MPR) application process, interns may be offered employment as an MPR with the HPD.
Examination Process
Interns must be prepared to participate in the program on the designated program start date. Start dates will vary based on application authorization and/or completion of the background investigation.
Step 1: Submit Your Application
Applications should be submitted at least seven months prior to being discharged or released from active duty.
Step 2: Interview
Applications will be reviewed. If the review is positive, an interview will be scheduled with the applicant. The interview is a required step in the application process and is by invitation only. Nevertheless, an invitation to interview does not guarantee admission into the program.
Step 3: Personal History Statement (PHS) / Background Investigation / Fingerprinting
Applicants who successfully complete the interview will be given access to their online PHS. Applicants will have ten (10) days to submit an accurate and complete PHS. The completed PHS will then be assigned to a detective who will conduct a background investigation.
Step 4: Employment Offer
If an applicant meets department standards, they will be issued an employment offer. The offer will be sent via email and applicants will have 48 hours to accept the offer by replying to the employment offer email in the affirmative.
Step 5: Submit Proof of HPD Recruit Application Submission
After accepting the offer, the applicant will have until a week prior to the start of the program to satisfy the last eligibility requirement for admission into the program: submitting proof of HPD recruit application submission.

  • Able to secure approval from unit commander
  • Proof of HPD recruit application submission*

*Submitted only after accepting the employment offer but no later than a week prior to the start of the program. In addition, the intern must be 20 years of age at the time of HPD recruit application submission - a minimum requirement for an HPD recruit applicant.
