Every position atArtCenter plays an important part in carrying out the cultural values, goals,strategic vision, and mission of the College. This includes upholding andcultivating an inclusive, respectful, and welcoming environment where everyonefeels a sense of belonging.

Reporting to the supervisor, the Shop Instructor serves as an extension of the classroom education and guides the students through the facets of fabrication, craftsmanship and problem solving. This position will also teach and assist in operations outside of design. Will provide coaching and mentoring to other instructors.

This is a part-time position based at our south campus. The position follows a 9-month academic-year schedule, with work occurring from September through May and summers off. The regular schedule is three days per week, Monday through Saturday, as assigned, primarily on the second shift, 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., with occasional daytime shift on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Flexibility is required, as the position may occasionally require a staggered, remote, or alternative work schedule to meet operational needs, including weekends or assignments at different campus locations.

Essential Functions

Shop Operations - 20%

  • Comply with policies, rules and regulations and reporting requirements relating to safety/heath, performance standards, operating procedures, processes, and training
  • Expert handling in a variety of wood and metalworking machines in the shop
  • Process faculty material requests as well as cutting various materials to stock material storage as needed
  • Responsible for operations of staff-only equipment as needed (Planner, Jointer, Panel Saw, Large Band Saw, Wide Belt Sander) to assist students and process work orders
  • Responsible for fabricating objects that support the new Model Shop tools and machines
  • Responsible for light maintenance of shop machines and equipment
  • Routinely check Model Shop satellite rooms and equipment

Shop Education - 40%

  • Provide advanced guidance and information regarding projects, design, materials, techniques, equipment, and procedures.
  • One-on-one mentoring on student projects discussing, teaching, and brainstorming on projects regarding aesthetics, techniques, materials, or tools needed to complete their project safely
  • Cultivate student skillsets ranging from beginning to advanced levels of fabrication focused towards improving their craftsmanship and understanding of materials
  • Deliver shop demos and workshops each term, in an isolated class environment, focusing on proper tool operations as well as shop safety expectations.
  • Work with supervisors in coaching, training, and mentoring the Shop Instructor 1 positions

Shop Safety - 35%

  • Comply with and ensure compliance to safety, PPE, and dress codes in accordance with shop policies
  • Attend required training sessions on assigned PPE and EHS provided by the College
  • Maintain a safe work environment throughout the department
  • Monitor and maintain shop tools in accordance with safety and maintenance standards
  • Maintain situational awareness of shop activity through all spaces and rooms
  • Assure that all students, staff, and faculty are always following safety standards
  • Optional opportunity: Opt-in for First Responder training for injuries, blood, and bodily fluid clean-up, as well as Emergency Responder management to enhance your skills and qualify for a wage increase.
  • Attend safety meetings and training sessions to stay updated on safety practices, emergency response procedures, and blood and bodily fluid clean-up, if opted-in.
  • Report any accidents or safety concerns to the supervisor and actively participate in incident documentation.
  • Contribute to monitoring the safety and cleanliness of the shop, identifying, and reporting potential hazards.

Non-Essential - 5%

  • Help with the unloading and stocking of stock and raw materials in the Model Shop and from the loading dock
  • Other related duties, as may be assigned
