Job description

As an Outside Machinist, you are responsible for the assembly, installation, modification, and repair of various surface ship machinery and systems. You set up, service, repair, align, and test machines that operate on a mechanical and electro-mechanical basis. Skilled with precision measuring tools such as dial calipers, micrometers, and stack height gauges, you perform all machining tasks with exactness. After evaluating procedures, you recommend changes related to the efficiency of setup and production.You perform major overhauls on and rebuild diesel, gas, and air compressors. You disassemble, reassemble, and test towing winch components, mooring winches, capstans, and anchor windlasses as well as hydraulic and mechanical cranes. Additionally, you remove and reinstall generators. You also perform all types of major alignments on components such as gearboxes and engine shafts. You get great satisfaction out of doing your part to ensure that marine vessels operate smoothly and safely!QUALIFICATIONS FOR AN OUTSIDE MACHINIST3 years of machining experience (preferred)General knowledge about ships and machineryKnowledge about gearboxesAbility to rig any and all props, shafts, generators, pumps, and enginesAbility to align pumps to motorsAbility to remove and reinstall generatorsAbility to take readings on props, shafts, and bearingsAbility to pass a drug testHave basic hand toolsShipyard experience is preferred but multiple factors will be taken into consideration.
